Who are these guys anyway?
Well, the average position player of the 13 on the roster general manager Greg Hamilton put together an average of six seasons in the minors, playing 485 minor-league games and is 25.2 years of age.
The average age of the 11 pitchers for manager Terry Puhl had at his disposal had logged an average of seven seasons, appearing in 176 games in the minors and is 27.5 years old.
Meet Mr. Average hitter for Team Canada: Emerson Frostad, 25, of Calgary Alta. A Texas Rangers farmhand, Frostad has split this season between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma in the Texas Rangers system. He had played 486 games in five seasons.
Meet Mr. Average pitcher for Team Canada: Brooks McNiven, 27, of Vancouver. He has spent time this season at Double-A Connecticut and Triple-A Fresno in the San Francisco Giants organization, pitching in 175 games in six seasons.
Combined the average Team Canada player is 27.4 years old, has played 344 games in the minors over six-plus seasons.
Canada will have to be more than average to return with our country's first team medal in the summer games since the Berlin Olympics in 1936 (a silver medal in basketball, a 19-8 loss to Team USA in a game played outside on a clay court in the rain.)
There is not a lot of major-league experience on the roster (countries are allowed to use pro players not in the majors as of July 23) and Canada lost starting shortstop Peter Orr (Newmarket, Ont.) when he was recalled due to injuries with the Washington Nationals and their best starter in Scott Richmond (North Vancouver, BC) when the Blue Jays recalled him one start before the Aug. 1 deadline when rosters had to be filed.
The Olympians have 1,386 games of major-league experience include led by reliever Rheal Cormier (Moncton, N.B.) who pitched in 683 games, in 16 seasons and is pitching senior ball. The others include: eliever Chris Reitsma (Calgary, Alta.) who worked in 338 games in seven seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves and the Seattle Mariners; first baseman Scott Thorman (Cambridge, Ont.) 175 games with the Braves; right-hander Mike Johnson (Edmonton, Alta.) 81 games with the Baltimore Orioles and the Montreal Expos; outfielder Adam Stern (Port Stanley, Ont.) who appeared in 48 games with the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles; second baseman Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.) 28 games with the 2001 St. Louis Cardinals; outfielder Ryan Radmanovich (Calgary, Alta.) 27 games with the 1998 Seattle Mariners; lefty R.J. Swindle (Vancouver, BC) three games with the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies; lefty David Davidson (St. Catharines, Ont.) two with the Pittsburgh Pirates; right-hander Steve Green (Greenfield Park, Que.), one game with the 2001 Anaheim Angels.
And now the Who's Who in detail of those wearing red and white Canada uniforms at the Olympics:
