Healthy Gillies has excellent week
Player of the Week, Week Eight Honours
By BOB ELLIOTT
Mike Gillies wore a red shirt for the 2000 season.
He injured his right shoulder and had only six at-bats, managing four hits for a lofty .667 batting average.
Now healthy, Gillies is proudly wearing the blue and silver of the University of Nevada Reno Wolf Pack. And he's wearing it with distinction.
While Gillies was impressive in his handful of at-bats in 2000, he has been just as impressive wearing his game jersey.
This week he went 12-for-20, an even .600 on the button as the Wolf Pack scored four victories. For that output, Gillies (junior, Port Moody, B.C.) receives this week's honor as the Player of the Week.
The weekly honor goes to the top Canadian of the 458 currently playing college baseball south of the border.
Gillies is batting .442 over the previous 15 games improving his over-all average from .059 to .358 playing in 11 of the 15 games.
Gillies has collected a team high 14 RBIs during the stretch. The white-hot streak now has him batting in the clean-up spot. Nevada has won 11 of its previous 15 games to even its record at 13-13.
Besides his .358 batting average, Gillies has six doubles, one triple, two homers and 15 RBIs for a .567 slugging percentage.
Exactly how Gillies week that was, unfolded:
_ 3-for-5 at the plate as the Wolf Pack rallied from an 11-2 deficit to defeat Hawaii at Hilo 13-12 in Western Athletic Conference action in 10 innings at Peccole Park. The Wolf Pack scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh closing the gap to 11-9. Gillies had a two-run double in the seventh. _ 5-for-6 as the Wolf Pack downed the Sacramento State Hornets 18-8 in front of 907 fans. Gillies extended his team season high hit streak to 12 games. After a scoreless first inning Sacramento State jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Nevada scored eight runs on six hits with the help of one Hornet error in the bottom of the second inning to take a 8-1 lead. Gillies doubled to start the inning and three consecutive walks by Sacramento State pitchers scored him to tie the game, 1-1. Gillies batted for a second time in the inning delivering a two-run single. In all, Gillies scored three times and drove in three runs in the romp. He doubled, his sixth of the season, and had four hits to extend his consecutive hitting streak to 12 games.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder, attended the College of Southern Idaho where he hit .350 with 12 homers to earn all-star honors in 1999. Gillies was male athlete-of-the-year in 1996 and named all-region as well as provincial MVP in 1997. Gillies is majoring in health ecology.
