Galloway hits it all the way
Player of the Week, Week Eight Honours
By BOB ELLIOTT
Mike Galloway had some options when it came time to transfer from Central Michigan.
One the one hand he could move south to the Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels where the ball travels as far as the eye can see.
And on the other he could stay in the Mid-American Conference and join the Miami of Ohio RedHawks.
As the RedHawks spring trip unfolds on the east coast of Florida, it appears he made the right choice.
First baseman Galloway (junior, St. Thomas, Ont.) was hotter than Miami Beach asphalt at noon, or hotter than South Beach during a Cindy Margolis taping.
Galloway Canadian Baseball Canadian College Player of the Week honors, the best of the 488 Canucks playing south of the border, and becomes the first player to be honored as a freshman (Week 7 in 2000), a sophomore (first team all--Canadian in 2001) and a junior.
His slugging efforts narrowly gave him the honor over outfielder Thomas Grubb (junior, Wheatley, Ont.), who helping the Central Michigan Chippewas get along with about Galloway just fine and right-hander Mark Garrard (junior, Port Hope, Ont.) of the Buffalo Bulls.
Grubb, a Grand Rapids Community College transfer, was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week and was named to the all-tournament team at the Stetson Invitational. What hurt Grubb was the fact that only one game of the tourney was played during our week. He lost out a week ago to co-winners right-hander Mike Roga (junior, Pickering, Ont.) of the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates and infielder Hyung Cho (sophomore, Scarborough, Ont.) of the Houston Cougars.
Garrard was selected as Mid-American Conference's East Division Pitcher of the Week.
