Zamojc helps T-Birds to win
Player of the Week, Week Nine Honours

By BOB ELLIOTT

The British Columbia Thunderbirds began the season as the Jeff Francis travelling road show.

A total of 60 scouts were on hand to see the lefty, ranked as the No. 2 college prospect in North America by the highly-respected Baseball America, make his first start at the Rawlings/Oakland A's Spring Training Showcase in Phoenix, Az.

The Thunderbirds lost their final three games on their spring trip to Arizona and California, the start of a five-game losing streak.

What could have been mistaken for the Francis' one-man show, coach Terry McKaig (Vernon, BC) and his program turned into a team somewhere along the way. A championship team.

The T-Birds walked into at Harris Field in Lewiston, Id., home of No. 1 pick in the NAIA pre-season poll, home of the Lewis-Clark State Warriors and they walked out champs of the Lewis-Clark State tournament.

Yes, Francis won, but the T-Birds went 4-0 as a team. We could honor UBC, the only official university baseball program in Canada, for its win over Lewis-Clark, named on 23 of 27 first-place votes in the NAIA pre-season poll.

However, this is this the Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week award and it goes to right fielder Mark Zamojc, who barely edges New Mexico State outfielder Ryan Kenning (senior, North Vancouver, BC), who continued his white-hot homer pace in the desert.

Zamojc (sophomore, Burlington, Ont.) had the second highest average for the T-Birds and drove in 12 runs, thanks to going 9-for-17 (.529) for the tournament with one double and two home runs so he's recognized as the top Canuck of the 494 Canadians playing south of the border.

T-Bird teammate Mark Dunstan (freshman, Calgary) led the way, going 7-for-11 (.636), with a double, three RBIs and five runs scored.

Knocking off the 10-time NAIA national champs isn't easy and does not happen every day. The Warriors have won the NAIA title in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2000.

How the T-Birds and Zamojc flew to the title, as he:

Singled in a run to put the T-Birds up 4-0 in the second inning in a 5-4 win over the Warriors in the finals. Right-hander Brooks McNiven (junior, North Delta, BC) pitched eight strong innings for the win in front of 100 fans. McNiven (4-0) allowed four hits, struck out four, and gave up one unearned run in what was UBC's eight-straight win. Closer Conor Whitely (sophomore, Prince George, BC) struggled to close the door, giving up three runs, all unearned, while serving up three hits in the ninth. Left fielder Dunston went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run. The Thunderbirds got on the board first on a bases loaded walk to second baseman Shawn Anderson (senior, North Vancouver, BC) in the bottom of the second. DH Waleed Elabed (junior, Brampton, Ont.) singled up the middle, in the bottom of the fourth, plating two runs. Catcher Chad Tuck (junior, Prince George, BC) hit a two-out double for the Thunderbirds in the bottom of the eighth and shortstop Mark Kittleson (junior, Coquitlam, BC) swapped places with Tuck, hitting an RBI double to right center, plating courtesy runner Chris Ames (freshman, Fredericton, NB). Third baseman Emerson Frostad (red-shirt freshman, Calgary, Alta.) led the Warriors by going 3-for-4, with an RBI.

Hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth and ace Francis struck out nine as the UBC defeated Lewis-Clark 5-3 in front of 250 fans. Zamojc hit his fifth home run of the season to put British Columbia ahead, 5-0. UBC got on the board, first, with three runs in the second as Dunstan doubled down the right field line and Tuck singled though the left side. Dunstan advanced to on a throwing error and Kittleson followed with a double to right and Adam Campbell (freshman, Calgary, Alta.) followed with an RBI single. Reliever Cory Stuart (sophomore, White Rock, BC) finished the eighth giving up one hit and Conor Whitely finished the game with two strikeouts. Conor Whitely closed the door in the ninth to pick up his team-best fourth save. Francis was named the Sport BC University Athlete of the Year at the 36th annual awards gala in Vancouver. Francis was named the NAIA Region I Player of the Year and an NAIA All-American after going 12-3 with a 0.92 ERA.

While Zamojc was honored, so was last week's Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week, first basemen Mike Galloway (junior St. Thomas, Ont.). Galloway was named the Mid-American Conference's East Division Player of the Week leading the Miami Ohio RedHawks in several offensive categories during the spring break trip to Boca Raton, Fla. The two most important Galloway RBIs two that came due to a two-run shot in the sixth which put the Red and White on top for good, 8-7.
