Picard catches weekly honours
Player of the Week, Week 13 Honours
By BOB ELLIOTT
The four-game series between the two America East Conference rivals at the Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Mass., could have been billed any number of ways.
In one corner were the visiting Maine Black Bears and in the other were the Northeastern Huskies. Going in it could have been described as:
Conference rival vs. conference rival.
Who is quicker a Bear or a Husky?
Or a meeting of the top two Canadian catchers playing in college: Luc Carlin (junior, Aylmer, Que.) of Northeastern and Alain Picard (junior, St. Foy, Que.) of Maine.
Well, in a close battle we give the nod to Picard over Carlin, with Aaron Izaryk (freshman, Markham, Ont.) finishing fast on the outside.
We also give Picard top billing as the Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week. Also receiving consideration for the best among the 533 Canucks playing south of the border were right-hander/DH Andrew Karkoulas (freshman, Guelph, Ont.) of the New York Tech Bears and right-hander Chris Davidson (freshman, Wolfville, NS), who pitched a one-hitter for the Brown Bears.
Picard, who served as the Maine DH for the four-game series due to a hamstring problem, was a combined 8-for-15 (.533) with five RBIs and four runs scored.
Carlin was 7-for-11 (.636) with one RBI and two runs scored.
Izarck, who has stepped in and squatted making sure that the Bears don' t miss a beat, wasn' t bad either going 4-for-9 (.444) in three starts.
There 11 Canadians are on the two rosters, seven with Maine.
How the series unfolded:

Last week' s question
Did right-hander Marc-Andre Lavoie (sophomore, Timmins, Ont.) and catcher George Kottaris (freshman, Markham, Ont.) of the Connors State Cowboys combine for the first all Canuck no-hitter south of the border?
This week' s answer
I believe it has been done before. I was in the outfield for Winthrop Eagles from 1994-1998 and witnessed a no-hitter thrown by Mike Condon (Sutton, Ont.) to his battery mate Brian Dunn (Woodslee, Ont.) in 1995 (if my memory serves correctly). The no-hitter was thrown against Cleveland State. Just thought I' d try to answer the question of the day. It' s great to see that there is someone keeping up with the incredible amount of Canadian talent playing south of the border. Keep up the great work.
