Galloway top man again
Player of the Week, Week 17 Honours
By BOB ELLIOTT
How good is Mike Galloway, of the Miami of Ohio RedHawks, anyway?
Well, in our week that was he was so good he could have hit in the middle of the lineup with the rest of those Miami Hurricanes.
Galloway hit almost .700 as Miami won three of five games.
For his hitting display, Galloway (junior, St. Thomas, Ont.) was named former Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week, edging catcher Jean-Gilles Larocque (senior, Garson, Ont.) for the honour which goes to the best of the 550 Canucks playing south of the border.
Galloway, a transfer from Central Michigan, earlier won the honour in Week 8 and in 2001 was named to the Canadian Baseball all-Canadian team.
How Galloway's impressive week went as he had:
_ Two hits in a 5-4 loss to the Akron Zips before 201 fans at Lee Jackson Field in Akron, Ohio. Catching for the RedHawks, Galloway singled through the left side in both the seventh and ninth innings.
_ Four hits, including his 12th homer, in a 13-3 win over Akron before 118 fans at Canal Park in Akron. Galloway, splitting his time between behind the plate and first base, singled through the left side in the first; hit a two-run homer to left on the first pitch he saw in the third; singled through the left side in the fourth and singled to left in the fifth. In all he drove in three runs.
_ Three hits in four tries in a 14-1 triumph over Akron. Catching and playing first Galloway singled through the left side in the first; had an RBI single to right in the fourth and singled to right in the fifth
_ Four hits, including two homers and five RBIs in a 13-3 win over Akron before 114 fans. Gallaway hit a two-run homer -- his 13th -- to left centre on a 2-1 pitch; singled to shortstop in the third and stole second; hit a two-run double on a 2-2 pitch in the fourth; hit the first pitch for a solo homer -- his 14th -- to left field in the sixth inning. He also stole his 12th base.
_ Three hits and an RBI as Miami was edged 6-3 win over the Wright State Raiders before 512 fans at McKie Field in Oxford, Ohio. Catching, Galloway, singled up the middle in the first, singled through the left side in the third and hit a three-run homer to left on a 2-2 pitch in the fifth. His 14th homer in the erased a 2-1 Wright State lead.
For the week, Galloway was 16-for-22 (.727) with 12 RBIs, two doubles and four homers.
Galloway, an NCAA Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and first-team selection at Central Michigan, was also named to the First-Team All-Mid-American Conference.
Galloway led the conference with .436 batting average entering the tournament. His versatility with the RedHawks this season led to his being named the MAC's top utility player. He has started all 57 games this season for the RedHawks, 32 as a first baseman, 15 behind the plate, nine at third, and one as a designated hitter.
Galloway also leads the MAC in hits and runs scored. Already leading the Red and White in 13 offensive categories Galloway is fast approaching several single-season records at Miami.
"Galloway has been a great addition to our team and has done everything that we expected of him," coach Simonds says. "He is a legitimate professional prospect."
In 2001, Galloway sas fifth on the team with a .346 average in 59 games leading CMU in at bats (234), hits (81) and RBIs (62). He was also named to the 2000 NCAA Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team after batting .376 with 11 homers and a team-high 47 RBIs.
Galloway earned eight letters at Central Elgin Collegiate Institute in hockey (three), volleyball (two), and one each in basketball, football and track.
To stand alone, Galloway edged Larocque, who only played two games, but singlehandedly led the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets to the West Virginia Athletic Conference Division II championship.
How Lacroque and the Yellow Jackets advanced as he had:
_ A game-winning three-run homer in the eighth inning to cap a five-RBI game as West Virginia State edged the Concord Mountain Lions in the tourney opener at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, W.Va. Larocque hit a solo homer in the third to narrow Concord's lead to 7-3, had a run-scoring double in the sixth to cut the Concord lead to 9-7 and then decided matters by hitting a one-out, three-run homer to right in the bottom of the eighth to put the Yellow Jackets in front for good. For Larocque it was his fifth double and his seventh home.
_ Didn't play in a 3-0 win over the Shepherd Rams.
_ Six RBIs in a 21-5 romp over Shepherd before 225 fans. Larocque was 2-for-3 as he hit a scoring fly ball for a 1-0 lead in the first; hit a three-run homer to right-centre in the second for a 7-0 lead; walked in the sixth; hit a two-run single in the seventh for a 19-5 lead.
Larocque ended the tournament going 5-for-8 with 11 RBIs. For West Virginia it was their 11th WVIAC baseball championship under head coach Calvin Bailey.
And other Canadians also being honoured this week:
_ Left-hander/outfielder Ryan Balan (senior, Whitby, Ont.), of the California-Pennsylvania Vulcans, earned North Atlantic Region Position Player of the Year in a vote by the region's coaches. Earlier, Balan won Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was a first team selection as both an outfielder and a pitcher. Balan hit .402 with 39 runs scored, 38 RBIs, eight doubles and 12 home runs for the PSAC Western Division champion Vulcans. On the mound, Balan was 7-1 with a 0.91 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 59.1 innings pitched.
_ Centre fielder Jean-Francois DuFour (freshman, Beauharnois, Que.) of the Saint Rose Golden Knights, won the Northeast-10 Conference's Freshman of the Year. The NE-10's 12 head coaches conducted the voting. Dufour was also chosen a first-team All-League pick. Saint Rose's season came to an end when it lost a one-game playoff 4-3 to Stonehill in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament in Easton, Mass. Dufour batted .356 and tied for the league lead with 19 home runs in his rookie campaign. He also set a Saint Rose single-season record with 67 runs scored while his 69 hits and 57 RBIs were among the top five marks in school history. Dufour was also among the conference's top-10 players in hits, runs scored, RBI, slugging percentage (.722) and home runs.

After leading the nation in both categories for most of the season before injuries and struggles at the plate slowed his numbers. Despite the fact that Kenning just .264 with four home runs and 20 in 23 league games, Kenning set the Aggie and Sun Belt Conference record for most RBIs in a single season and needs one extra base hit to tie Chris Weekly (1998) for the school record and needs two home runs to tie the school record of 25 set by Joe Williams in 1990. In his two seasons since transferring from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M -- coached by New Mexico State coach Gary Ward's youngest son Roger -- Kenning has belted 36 home runs and driven in 142 runs. The 36 career home runs for Kenning, a two-time former Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week, ranks fourth in Aggie history and his 142 RBIs rank fifth. He is hitting .356 with runners in scoring position this season.

_ Left-hander Jeff Francis (junior, North Delta, BC) was counted on to pitch more than two innings and 31 pitches for the No. 2-seeded British Columbia Thunderbirds at the NAIA Region I playoff tournament at Simplot Stadium in Caldwell, Idaho. However, strange things happen at tournament time and two innings in four games were all UBC were able to get from Franics. Francis started the opener and by the time he took the mound UBC was beating Western Baptist 8-0. UBC scored seven more times in the second and not wanting to use their best with such a huge lead, Francis was hooked as UBC thumped No. 3-seeded Western Baptist 19-3 in the opener before 114 fans.
