LAKE BUNENA VISTA, Fla. -- Well, three games into their fall training session this much is obvious for Team Canada:
The Atlanta Braves have a lot more talent at instructional league this fall than either the Houston Astros or the Washington Nationals.
The Braves thumped the Canadian Junior National Team 11-3 at Champion Stadium yesterday inside Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
Robert Heffinger, the second batter of the game, homered off the top of the scoreboard in left centre for a two-run homer against RHP Jonathan Paquet (Ancienne Lorette, Que.).
In the second game of the doubleheader, the British Columbian trio of RHP Nick Pivetta (Victoria), LHP Vaughn Mabone (Vancouver) and RHP Tom Robson (Ladner) combined on a two-hit shutout as Team Canada blanked the Seminole College Raiders 4-0.
Against the Braves, Paquet worked three innings allowing four runs -- three earned -- on three hits and two walks, while striking out three. The Braves scored an unearned run in the second.
Canada scored three in the third inning. DH Jalen Harris (Toronto, Ont.) led off with a single to right and advanced when Nicholas Mahovlich (Coquitlam, BC) was hit by a pitch. Simon Brisebois (Masouche, Que.) singled in a run. After Mahovlich advanced on a throwing error Ryan Johnson (Winnipeg, Man.) bounced out to knock in a run. Brisebois scored when Ryan Clarke (Mississauga, Ont.) reached on an error.
LHP Brian Cauvier-Bardis (St-Constant, Que.) allowed five runs -- four earned in three innings on six hits, while striking out one.
LHP Joel Pierce (Windsor, Ont.) allowed three runs in two innings on five hits and two walks.
Canada’s other hits went to RF Rowan Wick (North Vancouver, BC) and Brisebois with a pair of line singles each, while SS Brandon Dailey (Brantford, Ont.), Johnson and Harris had the other hits.
Pivetta pitched three hitless innings, walking one and striking out six.
Mabone followed him to the mound with a similar string of three zeros fanning three.
Canada scored three times in the fifth against Seminole. Dailey, Chayse Marion (Red Deer, Alta.) and Jones all singled to load the bases. Dailey scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch. Then Wick delivered a two-run single.
Robson took over in the seventh and was quickly in trouble on a one-out single to right. After a passed ball, Robson helped himself picking the runner off second. Robson lost the strike zone walking the bases loaded. Pinch hitter Kyle Perez bounced out to end the inning.
Kellin Deglan (Langley, BC) doubled to right centre and scored on a Marion single up the middle.
Robson allowed two hits and three walks in his three scoreless innings, striking out a pair.

Going deep: Marcus Knecht (Toronto, Ont.) had 10 at-bats and two hits -- both homers for Oklahoma State last spring. He transferred this summer to join the Connors State Cowboys.
How is he doing?

Voting time: Online fan voting for 2010 ballot for Ford C. Frick award, which honors excellence in baseball broadcasting begins Dec. 1.
For the seventh consecutive year, the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will conduct online fan balloting to help determine the final ballot for the Ford C. Frick Award. By casting votes fans will select three of the 10 names on the 2010 ballot for the Frick award, presented annually since 1978. Online voting runs from Dec. 1 through Dec. 31, and fans can cast votes once per day through December for up to three baseball broadcasters will be posted.
Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of continuous major league broadcast service with a ball club, network, or a combination of the two, and bios of each candidate will appear on the web site. Results of the fan voting will be announced in January, though updates will not be provided during the voting. The final ballot will be comprised of the three fan selections, along with seven other candidates, determined by a Hall of Fame staff research team.
The 2010 Ford C. Frick Award winner will be announced in February.
The Frick electorate includes all living award-winners and five historians appointed by the Hall of Fame. The voting electorate consists of 20 members, featuring 2009 Ford C. Frick Award winner Tony Kubek, former Blue Jays broadcaster and the other 14 living Frick Award winners: Marty Brennaman, Jerry Coleman, Gene Elston, Joe Garagiola, Ernie Harwell, Jaime Jarrin, Milo Hamilton, Denny Matthews, Dave Niehaus, Felo Ramirez, Vin Scully, Lon Simmons, Bob Uecker and Bob Wolff. Five historians and veteran media members are also part of the electorate, including Bob Costas (NBC), Barry Horn (Dallas Morning News), Stan Isaacs (formerly of New York Newsday), Ted Patterson (historian) and Curt Smith (historian).
More than 615,000 votes were cast during the first six years of online balloting, including a record 145,138 votes cast online in 2008. For the second consecutive year, former Reds broadcaster Joe Nuxhall paced all broadcasters in the fan-voting, totaling 19,547 votes. Former Expos broadcaster Jacques Doucet (10,282) and former Expos and Blue Jays broadcaster Tom Cheek (8,992) also earned spots on the final ballot.

Our No. 2,100 is RHP Ryan Oxford (Sussex, N.B.), who pitched for Vancouver Island University (VIBI) and plans on playing for New Brunswick at the Canada Summer games this year.

The former Intercounty umpire (1991-2006) worked the memorable semi-final playoff game between the Brantford Red Sox and the Toronto Maple Leafs, after the great power outage in 2003, when the CIty of Toronto couldn't turn the lights on at Christie Pitts. The game was resumed in Brantford, The defining moment came late in the game when three Leafs went down swinging.
