The most influential people in his baseball life: “Perry Keith (Connors State coach) was the only person to offer me a spot on a college team the year after I graduated high school. He taught me so much and gave me every opportunity to develop as a player and person. He has a formula for developing players that simply works when a young person buys in and Matt Holliday (2,096 hits in 15 seasons with the Cardinals, Rockies, Yankees and A’s) obviously a superstar, and great hitting coach. What I appreciated the most is his servant mind set and how he walks out his faith, and shares that with those around him. Beyond that, he lives with excellence. He taught us a lot about nutrition, and training. His strength set him apart, and seeing how he works, how he eats, and how he invests the time to be his best self explains why he will forever be remembered in baseball. He moved his family back to Stillwater following his retirement with a hand out to help those in the community he grew up in, as well as our baseball program.”
Appreciates classical music: Like Cody Johnson.
Bullpen behavoir: As bullpen catcher for the Barrie Baycats of the Intercounty League he warmed ex-pros Adam Hawes (Twins), Derek McDaid (Padres), Brad Bissell (Edmonton Cracker Kats-IND), Santos Arias (Twins), Adam Rowe (Royals), and Emilis Guerrero (Red Sox) plus Chris Nagorski, who attended Binghamton University name a few. Santos, Guerrero, and Hawes all threw pretty hard.
Leslee Holliday, co-host of Table Forty and married to former all-star Matt Holliday: “My kids -- since we moved back to Stillwater -- and going to Oklahoma State games the last couple of years ... when Matt played in the professional baseball there were a couple of players our boys were interested in seeing hit. They’d be running around doing whatever but then they’d say ‘Troy Tulowitski is up, let’s watch him hit.’ Or ‘Hey Nolan Arenado is up ... Let’s watch him hit.’ Since we moved back to Stillwater you became that person for our sons. Now it has been ‘Max is up, Max is up.’ There was something about you my boys were attracted to, they saw the work you put in behind the scenes they saw how competitive you are and how you prepared. Jackson and Ethan recognized that behavior and admired that. You should know Jackson and Ethan are really big fans.”
