We could not possibly write every game story of each and every Canadian player in college ball south of the border.
Right now there are 571 players and counting, without all the rosters being posted yet, as we head towards the 2013 total of 766 Canadians.
Yet on the opening weekend of the season, we always try to give some recognition to someone who starts the season with a splash.
And making the biggest splash in the pool in the desert were the Canucks with the Central Arizona College Vaqueros in a three-game series against the Phoenix Bears.
Check out this start to a season:
- RHP Brock Dykxhoorn (Delhi, Ont.) made his first start for CAC since transferring from West Virginia.
The right-hander worked five hitless innings, allowing one base runner -- a walk -- as he struck out an impressive 11 of 15 possible batters, as Phoenix scored a 2-1 victory with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
CF Andris Rizquez (Hamilton, Ont.) singled for the Vaqueros.
- Rizquez was hitless in three at-bats, walked, stole a base and scored a run in the second game of the series as the Vaqueros edged Phoenix 5-4.
- And in the finale of the three-game series, Rizquez had a day to remember, going 5-for-5 with four doubles and a triple as the Vaqueros beat Phoenix 11-5. Rizquez also scored three times. Gaining the win for the Vaqueros was RHP Connor Noble (Vancouver, BC), who gave up one hit and one run over four innings. Noble came on in relief in the third inning. Vaquero pitchers struck out 11 Bear hitters on the day.
Overall, the Vaqueros had 18 hits, nine of them for extra bases, with lead-off man Rizquez collecting six.
