19 innings later Dostaler one of 13 off to NAIA WS

For some teams it was relatively easy: three games, three wins.

For others it took four or five games.

And then there were the Missouri Baptist Spartans.

Missouri Baptist claimed a spot at the 55th annual Avista-NAIA World Series Monday but it was far from easy.

The Spartans ONLY needed 19 innings to edge Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs 4-3 to win the Kingsport, Tenn. bracket.

That means Missouri Baptist -- with five Canadians on its roster -- are off to Lewiston, Id. The Spartans have every day players in 2B Pier-Olivier Dostaler (Mont Carmel, Que.) and CF Ryan Clarke (Mississauga, Ont.) plus OF Geoff MacDonald (Regina, Sask.), OF Kyle Turner (Rosser, Man.) and LHP Curtis Sawchuk (Langley BC) are headed to the World Series.

In all, 13 Canadians are headed to Idaho, after a total of 59 Canucks were on the 45 teams competing in the nine NAIA Opening Round double elimination tournaments.

3B Tyler Wheeler (Guelph, Ont.), SS Johan Ochoa (St. Amable, Que.) and 3B Jean-Francois Dumais-Fyfe (Boisbriand, Que.) advanced with the Rogers State Hillcats.

LHP Ryan Zimmer (London Ont.) was on the roster of the Lee Flames.

LF Liam Goodall (Nanaimo, BC) advanced with the Embry-Riddle Eagles.

RHP Carsen Nylund (Surrey, BC), C Will Thorp (Surrey, BC) and Kevin McLeod (Surrey, BC) are assured of a berth with the Lewis-Clark State Warriors.

 

At the Kingsport bracket ... Dostaler had a pair of hits, hitting a double and scoring to tie the score at 1-1, Dostaler bobbled a grounder with two out in the second to set up Tennessee Wesleyan’s two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth, singled in the 12th and sacrificed runners into scoring position in the 19th.

Clarke singled to open the 16th and twice reached when he was hit by a pitch as well as dropping two successful bunts.

MacDonald pinch ran and scored in the seventh.

 

Dostaler had four hits and knocked in a run as Missouri Baptist thumped Point Park 13-6. MacDonald pinch ran and scored a run.

Dostaler singled in a 6-5 loss to Tennessee Wesleyan, while CF Clarke knocked in a run. Again MacDonald pinch ran and scored.

Clarke doubled in a run and scored three times in an 8-4 win against Benedictine, as Dostaler added a single. MacDonald pinch ran and scored.

Dostaler singled and knocked in a pair as Missouri Baptist scored three in the top of the ninth and then held on for a 6-3 win over Tennessee Wesleyan to force the finale.

 

On the season to date ... Dostaler has a .335 average with 31 RBIs in 42 games, while Clarke owned a .245 average with six RBIs in 39 games.

OF Turner batted .271 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 25 games, MacDonald hit .538 with two RBIs in 24 games.

On the mound, LHP Sawchuk was 1-0 with a 2.45 in six games, walking three and striking out four in 7 1/3 innings.

 

Tennessee Wesleyan opened with a 12-4 win over Taylor and then edged Missouri Baptist 6-5.

LHP Brian Bardis (St-Constant, Que.) started for Tennessee Wesleyan with a chance to wrap up a berth in the World Series. Bardis pitched well but left down 2-0 in a 6-3 loss to Missouri Baptist.

Bardis pitched five innings allowing two runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out one.

And then the Bulldogs lost in 19 innings to Missouri Baptist.

 

At the Claremore, Okla. bracket .... Wheeler helped gets Rogers State off on the right foot in an 8-4 win over Midland. He singled to left to knock in a run in the first for a 2-0 lead, he was hit by a pitch in the sixth and the pinch runner scored ... Ochoa pinch run in the sixth and scored the go ahead run to break a 4-4 tie.

Wheeler walked and second in the second, singled in the third and singled in the seventh in a 7-5 win over Lubbock Christian.

Wheeler singled and Ochoa knocked in a run in a 16-2 win against the Lyon Scots

Wheeler hit a run-scoring fly ball in the fifth for a 4-1 lead and singled in the eighth for an 8-1 lead as the Hillcats beat Lubbock Christian in the final.

On the season to date ... Wheeler is hitting .333 with one homer and 33 RBIs in 54 games. Dumais-Fyfe, batted .400 in five games. Ochoa hit .167 with three RBIs in 22 games.

 

Lubbock Christian’s Joel Lutz (Medicine Hat, Alta.) was hitless in the first-round, 7-5 loss to Rogers. 3B Lutz was held out of the hit column in a 3-1 loss to Bellevue. Lutz doubled, singled and knocked in two runs in a 15-7 win over the Lyons Scots. Lutz was hitless as the Chaps were eliminated 8-4.

On the season, Lutz hit .346 with 18 doubles, one triple, 15 homers and 16 RBIs in 57 games.

 

OF Chandler McLaren (Guelph, Ont.) didn’t play as Bellevue lost 3-0 to Lyon, beat Midland 7-2 and lost 3-1 to Lubbock Christian.

On the season, McLaren hit .273 with one homer and seven RBIs in 14 games.

 

RHP Sam Siddall (Edmonton, Alta.) didn’t pitch as Midland lost 8-4 to Rogers State and 7-2 to Bellevue.

On the season, Siddall worked 2/3 of an inning allowing three runs as he walked one.

 

At Cleveland, Tenn. bracket ... LHP Ryan Zimmer (London Ont.) didn’t pitch as the Lee advanced with a 12-3 win over Avila, a 9-2 triumph against Madonna and a 14-0 win over Avila.

On the season, Zimmer pitched six scoreless innings, walking one and striking out three. He limited opposing hitters to a .182 average.

 

Matthew Cook (Dresden, Ont.) pitched a five-hit, complete-game 8-0 shutout as the Madonna Crusaders blanked LSU-Shreveport in the opener.

Justin Cook (Dresden, Ont.) hit a solo homer and DH Matt Cook singled in a 9-2 loss to Lee.

Madonna was eliminated in a 3-2 loss to Avila as Matthew Cook doubled.

On the season, Justin Cook hit .293 with three homers and 44 RBIs, while Matt Cook was 8-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 12 games walking 18 and striking out 47 in 70 innings.

RHP Adam Prashad (Mississauga, Ont.) was 2-0 with a 3.65 ERA, walking three and striking out four in 12 1/3 innings. RHP Tyler Schofield (Windsor, Ont.) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless on the season, walking three and striking out five, holding opponents to an .053 batting average.

INF Chase Dobbie (Mississauga, Ont.) hit .083 with one RBI in 11 games.

 

LSU-Shreveport lost 8-0 to Madonna as 1B Greg Friesen (Regina, Sask.) had three hits, including a double. RP Riley Spencer (Estevan, Sask.) pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing four runs on two hits and two walks. Then, the Pilots were eliminated with a 6-3 loss Grand View. RHP Rory Young (Adam Lake, BC) took the loss, working 7 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out 12. Kym Barthel (Lethbridge, Alta.) singled in the loss.

On the season ... C Reed Lavallee (North Delta, BC) hit .326 with one homer and 16 RBIs in 43 games. Friesen hit .285 with three homers and 32 RBIs in 47 games. Barthel hit .257 with 17 RBIs in 49 games. On the mound, RHP Paul Barton (Qualicum Beach, BC) was 6-2 with a 6.44 ERA in 13 games as he walked 35 and struck out 43 in 50 1/3 innings.

 

At the Daytona Beach bracket ... LF Liam Goodall (Nanaimo, BC) singled and knocked in a run in Embry-Riddle’s  6-2 win over Ave Maria.

He singled to drive in a run against Concordia-California 7-6 and was hitless in the finale, a 6-5 win against Lindsey Wilson.

On the season, Goodall hit .260 with one homer and 24 RBIs in 57 games.

 

The host Lewis and Clark State Warriors have Nylund, who was 6-1 with a 3.52 ERA. He walked 10 and struck out 50 in 69 innings.

Thorp hit .167 in 22 games and McLeod was hitless in 14 games.

 

Elsewhere, at the Joliet, Ill. bracket ... Mayville State opened with a 4-1 win over Trinity Christian as C Zachary Mihic (Langley, BC) had three hits and RF Kurtis McCallum (Thunder Bay, Ont.) had two, including a double.

Then lost 5-1 to York as SS Phillip Steer (Toronto, Ont.) and RP Aaron Dick (Langley, BC) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four.

And the Comets were eliminated in a 6-5 setback against Cumberland as Steer contributed a pair of hits and Mihic singled and knocked in a run.

On the season ... McCallum hit .385 with seven homers and 41 RBIs, Mihic batted .340 with one homer and 15 RBIs, Steer hit .265 with one homer and 24 RBIs in 42 games and INF Riley Penner (La Riviver, Man.) appeared in three games,

On the mound, RHP Todd Leavitt (Vernon, BC) was 2-1 with a 4.95 ERA, walking 20 and striking out 20 in 20 innings, while Dick had a 4.42 ERA, walking nine and striking out 16 in 18 1/3 innings.

 

Cumberland opened with a 4-3 loss to Judson, as LF Brodie Ross (Markham, Ont.) had two hits and knocked in a run, while RF Richie Seaton (Scarborough, Ont.) chipped in with a single.

Seaton doubled, singled and drove in a pair in an 18-2 win over Trinity Christian. Ross also had a pair of hits, knocking in one run.

Seaton homered, singled and knocked in two runs in a 6-5 win against Mayville State.

Ross had three hits and an RBI as Cumberland was eliminated in a 4-3 10-inning loss to Judson. Seaton added a pair of hits.

On the season ... Ross hit .402 with two homers and 42 RBIs in 49 games, while Seaton hit .299 with one homer and 31 RBIs in 55 games.

On the mound RHP Mitch Rainer (Gibsons, BC) was 2-2 with a 5.00 ERA in six games, walking eight and striking out 10 in 27 innings.

 

RF Joseph Presutti (Maple, Ont.) knocked in the only run as Trinity Christian fell 4-1 to Mayville State.

Presutti was hitless in an 18-2 loss to Cumberland.

On the season ... Presutti hit .252 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 41 games.

 

At the Oklahoma City bracket ... LHP Blake Stewart (Delta, BC) pitched a complete-game, two-hitter as the Jamestown Jimmies blanked Oklahoma City 3-0. Stewart walked four and fanned 11. OF Jonathan Minchella (Bolton, Ont.) and C Nathan Christiuk (Dufrost, Man.) was hitless.

RF Dylan Lafrentz (Estevan, Sask.) had a pair of hits and knocked in a run in a 13-3 loss to Sterling. Christiuk was hitless.

Oklahoma City eliminated Jamestown with a 3-0 win as Minchella and Christiuk was hitless.

 

On the season ... Minchella hit .267 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 31 games ... Christiuk batted .231 with four RBIs in 30 games.

On the mound ... Stewart was 5-1 with a 1.80 ERA in 11 games. He walked 21 and fanned 44 in 55 games. LHP Landon Adelman (Pilot Butte, Sask.) worked 2/3 of an inning in two games.

 

Oklahoma City lost the opener 3-0 to the Jamestown Jimmies and then edged Oklahoma Science & Arts 8-7 with Adam Clark (St. Johns, NB) pinch running and scoring a run.

Oak City them blanked Jamestown 4-0 and was eliminated 1-0 in the final by Stirling.

On the season Clark hit .059 in 30 games.

 

RHP Simon Mitchell (Montreal, Que.) did not pitch as Science & Arts of Oklahoma lost 8-5 to Sterling, edged Northwestern 5-4 and was eliminated in a 7-6 loss to Oklahoma City.

On the season ... Mitchell was 4-0 with a 2.93 ERA in 11 games. He walked 16 and struck out 22 in 30 2/3 innings.

 

At the Santa Clarita Calif. bracket ... Neither Canuck pitcher worked for the Tabor Bluejays as they opened with an 8-7 win over Concordia-Oregon, lost 1-0 to The Master’s, edged Concordia 6-5 and lost 9-7 to San Diego Christian.

On the season ... LHP Dawson Newman (Peachland, BC) had a 1.17 ERA in 10 games as he walked two and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings. RHP Brad White (Delta, BC) pitched one inning allowing five runs.

 

OF Corbin Henderson (Coquitlam BC) didn’t play as Concordia-Oregon lost 8-7 to Tabor, then beat Cal State San Marcos 13-3 and was eliminated 6-5 by Tabor.

On the season ... Henderson was hitless in 10 at-bats.

 

The other schools to advance ...

In the final at the Hattiesburg, Miss. bracket ...Northwood (Texas) beat Oklahoma Baptist 7-4.

At the Montgomery bracket ... Faulkner knocked off Texas Wesleyan 14-2.
