Happy Canada Day, our 13th annual lineup

Happy Canada Day!
Right-hander Ryan Dempster pitched for the Boston Red Sox against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park Sunday afternoon.
And he gets the ball again Monday afternoon wearing a red jersey for our 13th annual Canada Day team.
What is Ernie Whitt thinking ... starting him on less than 24 hours rest?
Well, when we began selecting our Canada Day team in 2001 there wasn’t a World Baseball Classic and major leaguers were not allowed in the Olympics.
It was a mythical team then.
It a mythical team now.
Unlike the WBC there are not any meddlesome general managers or farm directors worrying about the season.
So, co-GMs Doug Melvin and Alex Anthopoulos, along with trusted assistant Gord Ash and Andrew Tinnish have scoured North America, all past WBC slight snits have been forgiven and our Hall of Famer commissioner Fergie Jenkins and his assistant Pat Gillick have TOLD everyone they have to play.
They had a few candidates to choose from: 17 Canucks in the majors this season (compared to four in 1970: Mike Kilkenny, Ron Taylor, Claude Raymond and Pete Ward), 94 in the minors, including seven on the roster for the triple-A all-star game ballot and another 12 at camps awaiting to be assigned.
Our crack medical staff of Drs. Ron Taylor, Jason Smith and Marc Philippon has everyone healthy.
This is Dempster’s eighth year on our team (starting in 2001-2002, 2010-12, closing in 2006 and 2007).
To introduce this year’s roster we turn the press conference over to Sportsnet’s Erin Hawksworth, since her brother Blake Hawksworth was on our team for four years (from the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers) and their grampa Jack Poole, a true Canadian, was instrumental in bringing the Olympics to Vancouver ... take it away:
1. Seattle Mariners centre fielder Michael Saunders of Victoria, B.C. makes his fifth start and sixth appearance on the Canada Day roster.
2. Montreal catcher Russell Martin of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is in his eighth start and ninth selection.
3. Etobicoke’s own, Canada’s best, Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds in his sixth start and eighth appearance. Votto being the team guy that he is, volunteered to play left field. (If Matt Stairs can play right in the 2009 WBC, why not?).
4. New Westminster, B.C.’s Justin Morneau, the Minnesota Twins first baseman, in his 11th start.
5. Making his Canada Day debut is DH Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves since he’s WBC-eligible as his parents grew up in Windsor. Freeman was eligible in March but with Votto and Morneau there wasn’t room.
6. After three straight left-hander hitters, next is third baseman Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C. in his fourth start.
7. In right will be Jason Bay of Trail, B.C. and the Mariners making his 11th start.
8. Playing second is Peter Orr of Newmarket and triple-A Lehigh in his seventh start and ninth appearance.
9. And hitting ninth in his Canada Day debut is shortstop Sean Jamieson of Simcoe, Ont. who is at class-A Visalia.
The handouts at the press conference show:
Pitching coach Denis Boucher of Lachine, Que., also has a rotation of Guelph lefty Scott Diamond, of the Twins, Josh Johnson of the Jays, WBC eligible since his father was born in Calgary, Houston Astros lefty Erik Bedard of Navan, Ont. and Jeff Francis of North Delta, B.C., recently demoted to triple-A Colorado Springs by the Rockies.
Toronto’s Jesse Crain of the White Sox; Port Dover’s John Axford of the Brewers; Aldergrove B.C.’s Scott Mathieson, Yomiuri Giants; Andrew Albers of North Battleford, Sask., triple-A Rochester; Gatineau’s Phillippe Aumont, triple-A Lehigh; Mississauga’s Chris Leroux, Yakult Swallows; Regina’s Dustin Molleken, Nippon Ham Fighters and James Paxton, Ladner, B.C. triple-A Tacoma are in the bullpen.
Calgary’s James Henderson of the Brewers will close.
On the bench are catchers George Kottaras of Markham with the Kansas City Royals and Vancouver’s Mike Nickeas at triple-A Buffalo; infielders are Taylor Green of Comox, B.C. injured in the Brewers system; Skyler Stromsmoe of Etzikom, Alta., triple-A Fresno; Langley’s Jordan Lennerton, triple-A Toledo and Laval’s Jonathan Malo, Quebec Capitales.
Back-up outfielders are London’s Jamie Romak, at triple-A Memphis, Jimmy Van Ostrand, Richmond, B.C. double-A Harrisburg; Vancouver’s Tyson Gillies, double-A Reading, Adam Loewen, Surrey, B.C., double-A New Hampshire and Rene Tosoni, Coquitlam, B.C., double-A Huntsville.
And a Happy Canada Day to you too.
