Letters of Intent

By Bob Elliott

Happy Canada Day!

There have been some special Canada Day moments over the years.

Like Montreal Expos right-hander Jeff Juden out pitching eventual Cy Young award winner 2-1 before 50,436 at the SkyDome in 1997.

Or Ryan Howard’s two-run single in the top of the ninth off Frank Francisco for a 7-6 Philadelphia Phillies win in front of 45,512 in 2011.

Carlos Delgado and Shawn Green going deep against the Baltimore Orioles in an 8-6 win before 30,263 in 1999.

And one of the more memorable when Alfredo Griffin and Gord Ash sang “This Land is Your Land” on the Jumbotron and later Joe Carter hit a two-run, walk-off homer against the Kansas City Royals in 1996.

This year will be unlike any other as two first-place teams meet (one Canadian) with two of the top decision makers for each side being Canadian: Doug Melvin from Chatham and Toronto’s Ash run the visiting Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon, while Montrealer Alex Anthopoulos is general manager of the Blue Jays with help from assistant GM Andrew Tinnish, an Ottawa native.

Another part of Canada Day is our annual Canada Day mythical lineup.

Manager Ernie Whitt has a deep lineup and a newcomer on coaching staff in Ryan Dempster who retired after being the anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years including six opening day starts and closing two others.

Our Hall of Famer commissioner Fergie Jenkins shook hands with his large mitt with his right paw not letting go until the player agreed to play. Our medical staff of Drs. Jason Smith, Marc Philippon and Ron Taylor have everyone healthy.

There are a few candidates to choose from: 19 Canucks have appeared in the majors this season compared to four in 1970 (Mike Kilkenny, Ron Taylor, Claude Raymond and Pete Ward), 82 in the minors, including 10 at triple-A and another dozen or so at camps awaiting to be assigned). The lineup:

1. Seattle Mariners’ Michael Saunders of Victoria, B.C. will be in right field making his sixth start and seventh appearance on the Canada Day roster. Saunders was MVP of the Phoenix WBC pool in the spring of 2013.

2. Blue Jays’ Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C. in his fifth start, will be at second where he has started 32 games for the Blue Jays.

3. Etobicoke’s own, Canada’s highest-paid athlete, Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds in his seventh start and ninth appearance. Votto volunteered to play left a year ago. This year? “I’ll play anywhere to add both those studs to the lineup.”

4. New Westminster, B.C.’s Justin Morneau, the Colorado Rockies first baseman, is in his 12th start and the senior member of the roster.

5. Making his second Canada Day start is DH Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves. He’s WBC-eligible as his parents grew up in Windsor. This is the type of stud Votto was speaking about. Freeman wanted in on the 2013 WBC, but there wasn’t any room with Votto and Morneau sharing DH and first.

6. Next is Montrealer Russell Martin of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Martin will play third where Pirates manager Clint Hurdle played him three games last year, giving him 18 starts in nine years. It is Martin’s ninth selection to Canada Day team and 10th selection.

7. Oscar Taveras, St. Louis Cardinals prospect, is in centre. Born in the Dominican, he holds a Canadian passport since his early days in Montreal and is WBC eligible.

8. Batting eighth is Markham catcher George Kottaras of the Cleveland Indians making his eighth appearance and first start.

9. Hitting ninth in his second Canada Day start is shortstop Sean Jamieson of Simcoe, Ont. who is at double-A Mobile in the Arizona Diamondbacks system.

And on the mound will be Tampa Bay Rays lefty Erik Bedard of Navan, Ont. the 13th time he’s been on the Canada Day roster and making his first July 1 start.

Also in a rotation: Mariners’ James Paxton of Ladner, B.C., Andrew Albers from North Battleford, Sask. is with the Hanwha Eagles in Korea, Jameson Taillon re-habbing in the Pittsburgh Pirates system and Guelph lefty Scott Diamond at triple-A Rochester.

Jeff Francis of North Delta, B.C., of the Oakland A’s, Calgary’s James Henderson of the Brewers, Toronto’s Jesse Crain of the Houston Astros; Aldergrove B.C.’s Scott Mathieson, Yomiuri Giants; Gatineau’s Phillippe Aumont, triple-A Lehigh and Regina’s Dustin Molleken, triple-A Nashville are in the bullpen.

Port Dover’s John Axford of the Indians will close.

On the bench are Vancouver catcher Mike Nickeas at triple-A Buffalo; infielders Taylor Green of Comox, B.C. and Richmond Hill’s Pete Orr, both at triple-A Nashville; Langley’s Jordan Lennerton, triple-A Toledo, plus outfielders Jamie Romak of London with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Vancouver’s Jim Adduci of the Texas Rangers and Mississauga’s Dalton Pompey at double-A New Hampshire.

And a Happy Canada Day to you too.
