He threw the first pitch for the Stanford Cardinal in the bottom of the first inning in the Friday opener.

And he threw the last pitch in the top of the ninth in the deciding game on Monday.

Of course, reliever Cal Quantrill didn’t know for sure when he left the mound if he’d be throwing another pitch this spring.

Quantrill allowed two singles in the top of the ninth before striking out the fifth place hitter looking and headed for the dugout down a run.

Three hitters later he was part of the celebration as Tommy Edman hit a two-run walk off for a 5-4 win over the Indiana Hooisers in front of 2,725 fans at the Bloomington, Ind. regional.

Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) and the rest of the Cardinal advance to the super regional this weekend against the Vanderbilt Commodores after the pairings were announced Tuesday.

How they won: Quantrill pitched the opener -- -- a complete-game 8-1 win over the Indiana State Sycamores before 2,164 fans Bart Kaufman Field. He needed only 104 pitches -- 75 strikes -- allowing one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out six. He recorded 11 ground ball outs and 10 fly ball outs.

Next Stanford lost, 4-2 to the host Indiana before 4,312 and an ESPN3 audience.

Stanford scored a 12-4 win over Youngstown State Penguins in front of 1,995 fans.

And to get to the regional final, the Cardinal advanced by knocking off Indiana 10-7 in front of 3,524 fans.

Quantrill took over in the final with two out and runners on first and second in the seventh, popping up the third-place hitter to end the threat. He allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth.

The home run made Quantrill the winner as he allowed four hits in his 38-pitch outing -- 28 for strikes -- which saw one unearned run and three strikeouts.

In picking up the two wins he pitched 11 1/3 innings allowing two runs -- one earned -- on eight hits and two walks. He struck out six in his 142 pitches 93 of them for strikes.

On the season ... for the 34-24 Cardinal ... Quantrill, who pitched for the Ontario Terriers and coach Scott Van deValk, is 7-5 with a 2.69 ERA in 17 games, making 16 starts. He has walked 31 and fanned 93 in 103 2/3 innings.

A total of 12 Canadians were on the rosters of the 64 whose schools made the NCAA tournament field. The others advancing:

 

_ SS Daniel Pinero (Toronto, Ont.) Virginia Cavillers.

How they won: Was hitless in a 10-1 win over Bucknell before 3,569 at Duncan Field to start the Charlottesville, Va. regional. He bunted a runner over in the first inning who came around to score.

Was hitless but scored a run in a 3-0 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks in front of 4,575 fans. He reached on an error in the first inning and scored the game-winning run when the next man hit a two-run homer.

Singled in a 9-2 win over Arkansas before 4,005 fans. Pinero reached on an infield hit and scored the first run of the three-run ninth.

On the season: For the 47-13 Cavaliers ... Pinero, who played for Danny Bleiwas and the Ontario Blue Jays, hit .252 as a freshman starting all 59 games. He had five doubles and 17 RBIs. He was 9-for-11 stealing bases.

_ OF Jeremie Fagnan (Calgary, Alta.) TCU Horned Frogs.

How they fared: Opened with the narrowest of margins over the Siena Saints, who beat the Canisius Golden Griffs in the MAAC conference final, 3-2 in 11 innings in front of 4,120 fans at the Fort Worth regional.

Beat Sam Houston State 3-2 in 22 -- yep 22 -- innings with 4,207 fans watching ... at the start.  TCU hitters were 11-for-72, while Sam’s men were 9-for-70 as 13 pitches worked, throwing a combined 594 pitches, walking 17 and striking out 32.

Beat Sam Houston State 6-1 before 4, 012.

On the season ... for the 45-15 Horned Frogs ... Fagnan, who played for the Vauxhall Academy Jets and coach Les McTavish, hit .203 with a double, two homers and 11 RBIs in 28 games, with a .634 OPS. During the season, he singled in a pair of runs in an 8-0 win over West Virginia. He went deep with a two-run homer in an 8-0 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green and a two-run homer in a 6-2 triumph against the Michigan Wolverines.

And those whose teams and its players are headed off for summer ball or summer jobs

_ LHP Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, Ont.) and RHP Zak Miller (Surrey, BC) of the Arizona State Sun Devils.

How they fared: Lost 3-2 to the Pepperdine Green Wave at San Luis Obispo regional at Baggatt Stadium before 2,085 fans.

Kellogg started as Sacramento State scored late for a 5-4 win before 2,152. The lefty worked seven innings, leaving with the score deadlocked 2-2. The lefty allowed two runs on six hits and four walks, while fanning two in his 95 pitch outing, 55 for strikes.

On the season ... for the 33-24 Sun Devils ... Kellogg, who pitched for Rich and Rob Butler’s Ontario Prospects, was 8-3 with a 3.76 ERA in 16 starts. He walked 22 and struck out 66 in 103 innings ... Miller, who pitched for the Langley Blaze and coach Doug Mathieson, was 1-0 with a 10.95 ERA in five games, making two starts as he walked eight and struck out six in 12 1/3 innings.

 

_ RF Jordan Mountford (Guelph, Ont.) Bryant Bulldogs

How he fared: Singled in five at-bats in a 3-2 loss to the Houston Bulldogs at the Baton Rouge regional in front of 10,435 at Alex Box/SkipBertman Field.

Doubled and walked in a 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions before 10,509.

On the season ... for the 42-16 Bulldogs: Mountford, who earned 2013 all-Canadian Canadian Baseball Network Third Team honours, and played for the Terriers and coach Danny Thompson, hit .306 with eight doubles, four homers and 25 RBIs in 36 games. He finished with a .864 OPS into the tournament.

 

_ OF Joey Guaragna (Mississauga, Ont.) Old Dominion Monarchs.

How they fared: The Monarchs lost 4-3 to the Maryland Terrapins allowing three runs in the bottom of the ninth at the Columbia regional before 5,178 fans at Carolina Stadium at Columbia, SC.

And were eliminated with a 4-1 loss to the Campbell Flying Camels in 12 innings in front of 5,240 fans.

On the season ... for the 41-20 Monarchs ... Guaragna, a freshman who played for the Ontario Blue Jays and Danny Bleiwas, hit .100 in 11 games with a double and two RBIs.

 

_ 1B Ryan Pidhaichuk (Richmond, BC) Kansas Jayhawks. 

How they fared: Was hitless in one at-bat in a 10-6 win over the Kentucky Wildcats at the Louisville regional before 2,365 fans at Patterson Stadium.

Appeared as a defensive replacement but didn’t have an at-bat in a 6-3 loss to Louisville Redbirds in front of 3,341 fans.

Appeared as a defensive replacement but didn’t have an at-bat in an 8-6 loss to Kentucky before 2,275.

On the season ... for the 35-26 Jayhawks ... Pidhaichuk, who played for the Fraser Valley Chiefs and coach Dennis Springenatic, hit .211 with four doubles, a triple, a homer and 12 RBIs in 53 games.

 

_ LHP Zach Mayo (Mather, Man.) North Dakota State Bison.

How they fared: Lost a 2-1 decision to Oregon State at Corvallis, Org.

Was eliminated in a 2-1 setback by the UNLV Hustlin’ Rebels.

On the season ... Mayo, who pitched at Vauxhall for McTavish, didn’t have a record appearing in seven games, including two starts. He had a 3.76 ERA. He walked 10 and struck out 11 in 11 2/3 innings. Mayo’s last two outings were a one-inning outing May 10 against the Winnipeg Wesmen and an April 29 four-inning start against North Dakota. He allowed a single to Tony Ingram, walked two and hit a man, allowing two earned runs in an 11-3 North Dakota win. Against North Dakota he worked four scoreless innings allowing two hits and three walks, while fanning a pair. He threw 69 pitches 37 for strikes.

 

_ RHP Riley Coverdale (Puslinch, Ont.) George Mason Patriots.

How they fared: Dropped the opener 7-2 to the Rice Owls at the Houston regional before 4,355 at Reckling Park.

Were eliminated with a 7-3 loss to the Texas A@M Aggies in front of 4,223.

On the season ... for the 34-22 Patriots ... Coverdale, who pitched for the Etobicoke Rangers and coach Denny Berni, was 1-0 in 10 relief appearances with a 10.64 ERA, walking 10 and striking out five.  His last two outings were April 23 in a 13-4 loss to the Maryland Terapins and April 8 when he pitched two innings in an 11-0 loss to Maryland. Coverdale allowed five runs in 2/3 of an inning on one hit and four hit batters in his last outing. Coverdale allowed two runs on three hits and one walk. His win came when he worked a scoreless 11th and 12th as George Mason edged the Wichita State Shockers 5-4 in 13 innings. He allowed two hits and walked two, while striking out one.

 

_ INF Kyle Hann (Oakville, Ont.) and OF Jacob Robson (Windsor, Ont.) Mississippi State Bulldogs.

How they fared: Knocked off the San Diego State Aztecs 5-2 at the Lafayette regional before 3,489 fans at Tigue Moore Field.

Moved to 2-0 with a 3-1 win against Jackson State 3-1 in front of 3,531 fans.

Fell 8-3 to the host Louisiana Lafayette Rajun Cajuns before 3,725 fans.

And was eliminated with a 5-3 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette with 3,920 fans on hand..

On the season: for the 39-24 Bulldogs ... both Hann and Robson, who played for the Ontario Blue Jays and Bleiwas, were injured early and had surgeries. Hann hit .100 with one RBIs in 12 games ... Robson batted .063 in 18 games. Both have applied for medical red shirt status.
