Blue Jays From Away
Now that the season is over, the crew at Blue Jays from Away will take a look at the Blue Jays one by one and review how each player’s season went, whether he met expectations (or not) and look at how he fits into (what we think of) the Blue Jays’ plans going forward.
30-year-old Canadian lefty Scott Diamond signed with his hometown Blue Jays club last November on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. He, as expected, didn’t make the club out of spring training but his four innings of relief work with just one hit allowed left the big league club with a positive impression as he headed for Buffalo.
Diamond, throwing his fastball in the mid-80s (as I saw in minor league camp), had a solid start to his season as a starting pitcher in Buffalo, throwing 74 innings over 12 starts in the first two months of the season, posting an ERA of 3.16 with 1.16 WHIP despite only 37 strikeouts. He was called up to the majors and pitched on June 13, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks, giving up two home runs in one inning. Two days later he was designated for assignment and, after clearing waivers, was sent outright to Buffalo.
Diamond finished the season 9-15 for Buffalo and had his numbers bloated to a 4.50 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. He didn’t walk many, just 32 batters over 166 innings but only struck out 100. Diamond elected free agency on October 14, before the Blue Jays were even out of the playoffs.
Contract Status
Diamond is a free agent.
Emily Says
Canadian-born Scott Diamond signed a minor-league contract with the Jays last November. He made one appearance with the big club, throwing one inning on June 13 against the Phillies. He allowed three runs on two hits and two walks. The third of his three runs scored before on a forceout, his first out of the inning. He didn’t strike anyone out, and was DFA, then sent back to Buffalo on June 17th. His ERA was 27.00 and his WHIP 4.00
