2016 Blue Jays Season Review: Scott Feldman

Now that the season is over, the crew at Blue Jays from Away will take a look at the Blue Jays one by one and review how each player’s season went, whether he met expectations (or not) and look at how he fits into (what we think of) the Blue Jays’ plans going forward.

The Blue Jays acquired right-handed reliever Scott Feldman on August 1 from the Houston Astros for pitching prospect Lupe Chavez. While Feldman was having a strong season with the Astros, that success did not follow him to Toronto as he was very poor with the Blue Jays. Feldman had a 2.90 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with the Astros but gave up a boat load of hits with the Blue Jays. He allowed 14 earned runs, 23 hits and six walks over 15 innings for an 8.40 ERA and 1.93 WHIP. Feldman was left off the postseason roster and became a free agent at the end of the season.

After coming to Toronto from Houston in a trade deadline deal, Scott Feldman made 14 appearances totaling 15 innings. He allowed 14 earned runs, including one to give his former team a walk-off in his first outing as a Blue Jay. That was his only loss, he also was credited with two wins.

His ERA was 2.90 with Houston, but ballooned to 8.40 with Toronto. His WHIP grew from 1.24 to 1.93. He walked six and struck out fourteen. In seven of his appearances he didn’t allow a run (six where he allowed no hits), but he had three incredibly rough outings – one in Kansas City where he allowed three runs, one two days later in Tampa where he allowed four, and one in September where he allowed four runs, three of them earned. Over the course of the season, Gibby began using him in only low-leverage situations. He allowed one of four inherited runners to score. He did not make the postseason roster.
