Brock, Hawks soar through undefeated weekends

Laurier Golden Hawks' Jonathan Brouse, OUA all-time hit leader went 7-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of the U of T Blues.

Badgers and Golden Hawks have Perfect Weeks

By Justin Ayles
A full slate of games were played this past weekend and then some. Two teams had perfect weekends. The Brock Badgers and Laurier Golden Hawks finished with impressive 4-0 records. Laurier excelled on the pitching side while the Badgers were slugging balls all over the field. These two teams had unbelievable weekends but with five walk offs and a few extra-inning games being played, this might have been the most exciting week of OUA Baseball in some time.

The Golden Hawks made the trip to Kingston as the extended travel had no ill effects. Zach Lawrence and Christian Hauck threw gems and they squeezed out enough offense to take both games. Laurier had a matchup with the Varsity Blues on Sunday and this is where their vet hitters took over. All-time OUA hit leader Jonathan Brouse scorched Toronto in the two games going 7-for-7 on the day. Jeff Hunt also had a monstrous Sunday as he tallied five hits with five RBIs and two home runs. The Hawks received great pitching once again from Jake Tougas and AJ Padmore. All four starters had quality starts and gave the offense plenty of chances to win ball games.

Two-time MVP Justin Godeon ...

The Brock Badgers got their offense ignited on Saturday against the York Lions. Sophomore shortstop Noah Koffman had a day to remember going 6 for 7. The Badgers had other great offensive contributions by Tyler Nakamura and freshman Matt Legg. Brock also had good enough pitching to come away with a sweep. On Sunday, Brock was up against long time rival Guelph in a battle of two teams with winning records. Two-time league MVP Justin Gideon started it off with a tape measure home run in Game 1 and it got the offense rolling. Badgers would pile on 12 runs and Chase Porter pitched a great ball game to secure his first win of the season. Game 2 saw a back and forth affair as both teams were hungry for victory. The Badgers got off to a quick start but let the Gryphons back into the game.  It took a gutsy relief performance from freshman Nick Subramaniam to shut the door as he winded up with the win and five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings pitched.

Elsewhere in the league saw the Queen’s Gaels have an impressive Sunday afternoon on home turf. The Gaels were in two tightly contested ball games against the McMaster Marauders. Both games went into extras with the Gaels coming out on top with a walk off single by Matt Plut and then a walk off home run by Zach Johnson. Queen’s had one of the more impressive pitching lines of the weekend as Jordan Herbison went 10 innings to pick up the win!

Western finished the weekend with a 4-2 record, as they had to make up a double header earlier in the week. Waterloo split both series as they have been doing that quite a bit this season. Ryerson also split both of their series as Charlie Crabb threw a nine-inning gem against York.  McMaster took one of the games from the Ryerson series, it was their first win of the season. Guelph was able to take a game from the Mustangs but it was their only win of the weekend.
