The Dominican Summer League Blue Jays were the only winners on the slate on Friday as the minor league affiliates went 1-4 and I got to see some baseball in New Hampshire.

Buffalo Bisons
Scheduled Off Day

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Bowie Baysox 8
After a first inning in which he appeared in command, things got away from Jason Berken as the Bowie Baysox scored early and hung on to defeat the Fisher Cats, dealing them their fifth straight loss. Berken started well, putting the side down in order in the first inning and painting the corner with his four-seam fastball but he gave up three runs in the second inning and was charged with another three after leaving the bases loaded with no one out in the fourth. In all, he threw three innings, giving up six runs on seven hits (including a home run) with one walk and two strikeouts. Brady Dragmire came in with the bases loaded in the fourth and let all three runs score before allowing two two of his own. He gave up five hits over his two innings and struck out one. John Stilson struggled to throw strikes but emerged from his inning unscathed, touching 95 mph on the radar gun and striking out one with one hit and one walk allowed. Murphy Smith came in and did what he does best--get outs--throwing two scoreless innings with a hit and a walk, striking out one. Danny Barnes finished the game off, throwing a perfect ninth, striking out two.

Ryan Lavarnway and Melky Mesa accounted for most of the offense provided by the Fisher Cats with each getting two hits. Lavarnway drove in a run with a double and scored himself while Mesa was 2/4 with a triple and a solo home run, driving in a pair. Dwight Smith also drove in two runs, going 1/3 with a walk and a run. Shane Opitz had the Fisher Cats’ sixth hit, a double.

Player of the Game: Ryan Lavarnway and Melky Mesa

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, St. Lucie Mets 3
The 551 fans in attendance at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium got some extra baseball but they didn’t go home happy as the Blue Jays lost 3-2 in 12 innings to the St. Lucie Mets. Starter Francisco Rios had a solid game, allowing two runs on five hits (including a home run) in six innings, striking out three but it was Conor Fisk who went above and beyond, throwing five one-hit innings, walking one and striking out seven. Alonzo Gonzalez allowed the winning run on two hits and a walk in the 12th inning, dropping his record to 2-4.

Dickie Joe Thon brought his batting average up to .300 thanks to a 4/5 effort that included a double while Ryan McBroom had three hits and a walk. Jorge Saez drove in both of the club’s runs, going 2/5 with a home run. Derrick Loveless also had two hits. Anthony Alford was 1/4 with a double but also came out of the game in an interesting switch that had Jonathan Davis move from left to center field, L.B. Dantzler from first base to left and DH Ryan McBroom come into the game as the first baseman, nullifying the DH. Incidentally, when the pitcher’s spot came up in the bottom of the 12th inning, it was another pitcher, former right-fielder Carlos Ramirez, who came in to pinch hit but struck out.

Lansing Lugnuts 3, West Michigan Whitecaps 11
The Lugnuts went into West Michigan but the outcome wasn’t positive as the club dropped their series opener by an 11-3 score as the Whitecaps feasted on the Lugnuts’ pitching for 19 hits and 11 runs. No pitcher escaped the barrage with Ryan Borucki taking five runs and seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts over three innings. Josh DeGraaf followed with four runs on seven hits and four strikeouts in three innings and Patrick Murphy gave up the Whitecaps’ only home run, allowing two runs on five hits in two innings.

The offense contributed only seven hits with two from Max Pentecost (both singles) and Ryan Hissey (also two singls with one RBI). Juan Kelly hit his sixth home run, a solo shot in the ninth inning to go 1/4.

Player of the Game: Ryan Hissey, Max Pentecost and Juan Kelly

DSL Blue Jays 6, DSL Orioles1 3
The DSL Blue Jays ran their record to 4-2 with a solid, 6-3 win over the Orioles1 club. Mc Gregory Contreras and Yhordegny Kelly led the club with two hits each; Contreras had a triple and two runs while Kelly was 2/3 with a home run, two RBI, a walk and two runs.

Dany Jimenez started and allowed just two hits in four innings with five strikeouts. Alvaro Galindo got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts in his four innings. Juan Bautista (2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K) and Luis Mendoza (1/3 IP) finished the game.

Player of the Game: Mc Gregory Contreras, Yhordegny Kelly and Dany Jimenez
