Jay Blue: Abel, Bichette, Dominguez, Loveless, Panas, Sinay, Urena

Connor Panas (Toronto, Ont.) had a pair of double and knocked in a run for class-A Lansiing.

Blue Jays from Away

In seven games for the Blue Jays’ minor league clubs, they won three of them, getting wins in Dunedin, Vancouver and the GCL (where the club has been incredible, putting together a 17-3 record so far this year).

 
Buffalo Bisons 3, Lehigh Valley IronPigs 4
The Bisons have been stagnating since the All-Star break, losing their third straight to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 4-3 on Saturday despite home runs from Matt Dominguez and Dalton Pompey. Pompey was 1/3 with the solo shot and a walk while Dominguez was 2/4 with the solo home run. Jesus Montero also contributed two hits.

Scott Diamond gave up all four runs (three earned) for the loss over six innings while Danny Barnes faced one batter over the minimum for two innings, striking out three.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3, Portland Sea Dogs 7
The Fisher Cats got three runs on only three hits in a 7-3 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs. One of those hits was a two-run home run by Derrick Loveless (who was 1/3 with a walk).

On the mound, Jeremy Gabryszwski only lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks. Jason Berken allowed another run over 2 1/3 innings and Tim Mayza and Murphy Smith combined for 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Bradenton Marauders 3
Dunedin finally got a win over the Bradenton Marauders, beating them 5-3 despite getting outhit 10-5. Richard Urena continues to be a force at the plate, going 2/3 with a home run and three RBI. Danny Jansen had two more hits, raising his batting average to .260 with the singles and a walk.

Conor Fisk started and gave up three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two before Adonys Cardona scattered three hits in his inning (without allowing a run) and Colton Turner picked up his fifth save of the year (with Dunedin), giving up a hit in two scoreless innings.

Lansing Lugnuts 4, Burlington Bees 12
The Lugnuts opened their series with the Burlington Bees, losing 12-4 on Saturday. Tayler Saucedo gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk over two innings and Ryan Cook kept the club in the game by throwing two scoreless frames, giving up a hit and striking out one. Tom Robson took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) over 2 1/3 innings despite striking out three and Danny Young surrendered another three runs (two earned) over one inning. Daniel Lietz finished the game with 2/3 of an inning of ball, stranding his two inherited runners.

The offense churned out 11 hits, getting three from Connor Panas including two doubles and an RBI while Justin Atkinson hit his fourth home run of the year, going 1/4 with two RBI. J.C. Cardenas added two hits (including a double) while Ryan Metzler was 1/3 with two walks and a run but made a throwing error.

Vancouver Canadians 9, Boise Hawks 4
The Canadians finally beat the Boise Hawks by a 9-4 score on Saturday. The Blue Jays’ first-round draft pick of 2016 made his first Vancouver appearance, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts over three innings. Zach Jackson also made his Vancouver debut, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in one inning. Nate Abel come in and put out the first for the Canadians, throwing four innings with just two hits allowed and striking out six. Nick Hartman pitched the ninth for the Canadians and avoided the worst despite giving up three hits and striking out two.

The offense was led by D.J. McKnight who was 3/5 with a double and two triples, adding a couple of RBI, and J.B. Woodman who was 3/5 with a double and two runs. Rodrigo Orozco (2/4, 2B, 2 R, BB), Christian Williams (2/5, 2B, 3 RBI) and Javier Hernandez (2/5, 2 2B, 2 R) each had two hits and Jacob Anderson drove in two with a double, going 1/3 with a walk.

Player of the Game: Nate Abel, D.J. McKnight and J.B. Woodman

 

Bluefield Blue Jays 5, Greeneville Astros 7
Bluefield was looking to put a win in the books after taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth but the Greeneville Astros rallied for three runs to defeat Bluefield 7-5. Starter Hansel Rodriguez struck out nine batters but also walked four, giving up two runs on three hits in just four innings. Kelyn Jose continues to struggle with his control, walking three batters in 2/3 of an inning while Brayden Bouchey gave up two unearned runs over 2 1/3 innings. Hunter Barnett took the loss, giving up three runs over 1/3 of an inning before Andrew Deramo (who allowed his inherited runner from Barnett to score) finished the last two outs of the game.

Bradley Jones (2/5, R) and Jesus Severino (2/4, 2B, 2 RBI, R) had two-hit games while Nick Sinay drove in a pair of runs, going 1/4 with a walk. Ridge Smith hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot, going 1/4.

GCL Blue Jays 10, GCL Tigers East 3
Playing at home on Saturday, the Blue Jays’ GCL juggernauts continue to roll, this time over the GCL Tigers East by a 10-0 score. The Blue jays got two home runs including another one (his third, and his first non-grand slam) by Bo Bichette who was 3/3 with a double, a walk, four RBI and two runs, pushing his batting average to .418. Ryan Gold (2/4, 3B, R) and Kevin Vicuna (2/5, 2 RBI, R) also had two hits each while Norberto Obeso was 1/3 with a double and two walks and Sterling Guzman was 1/3 with a home run and a walk.

Dany Jimenez was excellent, giving up just one hit and one walk over six innings with seven strikeouts. Travis Bergen (1 IP, 1 H, 3 K), Jake Fishman (1 IP, 3 K) and William Ouelette (1 IP, 1 K) were also excellent, finishing the game and limiting the Tigers to just two hits overall.
