Blue Jays from Away

With seven completed games on the agenda for Friday, the Blue Jays’ affiliates eked out a winning record, putting up four wins and three losses including a massive win for the Bluefield Blue Jays.

Buffalo Bisons 0, Pawtucket Red Sox 4
The Bisons opened their series against the Pawtucket Red Sox by getting shut out 4-0. Jesus Montero had the Bisons’ only two hits, raising his average to .314.

Mike Bolsinger went four innings, giving up three runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts to take the loss while Jason Berken provided four more innings of one-(unearned)-run ball, giving up four hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Bo Schultz struck out one in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Player of the Game: None

Roster Notes: Ezequiel Carrera was sent to the Bisons to begin a rehab assignment.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Trenton Thunder 4
The Fisher Cats scored first, tacked on some runs and then held on in the ninth to beat the Trenton Thunder 5-4. The excitement at the end of the games was on the heels of a stellar start by Conner Greene who went six hitless innings, walking two batters and striking out six. Brady Dragmire’s first two innings of relief went smoothly with a walk in the seventh and a batter reaching base on an error in the eighth. In the ninth, three of the first four batters reached base before Billy McKinney hit a grand slam, chasing Dragmire who was charged with four runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings. Chris Smith earned his 11th save, giving up a hit and striking out one over 2/3 of an inning.

Christian Lopes continues to swing a hot bat and is nearing the .300 mark after a 3/5 game, driving in a run and scoring once, getting picked off and caught stealing. Richard Urena also continues to be red hot, going 2/5 with a double and an RBI while Dwight Smith, Jr. was 2/4 with an RBI and a run. Roemon Fields was 2/4 with a triple, an RBI and a run but was also picked off and caught stealing.

Player of the Game: Conner Greene

Dunedin Blue Jays 6, Brevard County Manatees 2
Ryan McBroom went deep for the 19th time this season (in Dunedin), leading Dunedin to a 6-2 victory over the Brevard County Manatees. Ryan “McBoom” was 1/3 with a two-run home run and a walk while Danny Jansen was 2/4 with a run. Jorge Flores was 1/3 with a walk, as was Anthony Alford who drove in two runs and scored once. Jonathan Davis hit his eighth triple of the year, going 1/2 with a sacrifice fly, an RBI and a run.

Francisco Rios started the game and left after a rain delay postponed the start of the second inning, giving up three hits and striking out one. Justin Shafer was strong the rest of the way, giving up two runs on six hits (including a home run) and one walk with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Dusty Isaacs was called on to finish the game with two on and two out in the ninth.

Player of the Game: Justin Shafer

Lansing Lugnuts, West Michigan Whitecaps
The Lugnuts’ game was suspended in a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning and will be completed today.

Roster Notes: Daniel Lietz was suspended by the Midwest League for throwing inside against the Bowling Green Hot Rods on August 3.

Vancouver Canadians 3, Hillsboro Hops 6
The Canadians’ slide continues as they dropped the opener against the Hillsboro Hops 6-3 on Friday night, making it eight straight losses for the Cs. The offense continues to struggle, putting up three runs on six hits including two singles from Nash Knight, a triple from Joshua Palacios and a double each from Yeltsin Gudino and Deiferson Barreto. Barreto was 1/3 with a walk and two RBI.

Denis Diaz allowed all six runs over four innings, giving up five hits and walking six batters with two strikeouts. Nate Abel did an excellent job of holding the Hops while the offense tried to come back (with two runs in the ninth), throwing four two-hit innings, striking out three.

Player of the Game: Nate Abel and Deiferson Barreto

Bluefield Blue Jays 18, Pulaski Yankees 5
The Bluefield bats bullied the Pulaski pitchers, blasting five home runs in an 18-5 victory despite only nine hits (but 12 walks). Bradley Jones and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. each hit two home runs while Jones piled on the stats in this one. Jones drove in seven runs with three hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly and scored four times. Guerrero drove in two, hitting two solo blasts and was 3/4 with a walk and three runs. Javier Monzon was officially 0/1 but walked four times, drove in a run and scored four times. Levi Scott also went deep, hitting his fifth homer and driving in five runs after coming in for Cam O’Brien in the fifth inning. Scott was 2/3 with two runs and a double.

Juliandry Higuera was likely facing a stiff wind blowing out in addition to the Pulaski Yankees and he limited the damage of the two solo home runs he allowed by not walking anyone and giving up just four hits over five innings with eight strikeouts. Christian Cox also gave up a home run, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Chris Hall completed Bluefield’s walkless game, allowing three hits and striking out one over three innings to earn the save.

Player of the Game: Bradley Jones

GCL Blue Jays 1, GCL Tigers West 9
The GCL Blue Jays have seen their winning percentage slip to a terrible .750 on the season, losing their second in a row and fourth in their last five games, 9-1 to the GCL Tigers West. The offense went conspicuously missing with four of the six hits coming from Ryan Gold (2/4, 2B, R) and Yorman Rodriguez (2/2, BB, RBI).

Dany Jimenez started, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks over just 2 2/3 innings, striking out three while Randy Pondler allowed the next four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Juan Meza had a solid outing, with just one batter reaching base due to being hit, over two innings.

Player of the Game: Ryan Gold and Yorman Rodriguez

DSL Blue Jays 10, DSL White Sox 1
While the GCL Blue Jays were hammered in their game, the DSL Blue Jays did the hammering, beating the DSL White Sox by a 10-1 score on Friday. Jesus Colman made his first professional start, throwing five innings of one-hit ball, striking out four before Meliton Ryees took over, giving up a run on four hits in three innings. Wilton Mueses finished the game, giving up a walk and a hit with one strikeout.

Luis De Los Santos was the big slugger for the Blue Jays, going 3/5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs. Victor Figuereo was 3/4 with a double, a walk and two runs while Yhordegny Kelly (2/4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Yeison Estevez (2/5, RBI, R, SB) had two hits each. Ronald Concepcion was 1/4 with a solo home run as well.
