Blue Jays from Away

A 5-3 record over eight games was the result of Wednesday’s action for the Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league teams.

 
Buffalo Bisons 1, Indianapolis Indians 0
The Bisons prevailed against the Indianapolis Indians in a brisk 1-0 game that finished in just over two hours. Canadian Scott Diamond struck out six over eight innings without walking a man, allowing only four hits. Dustin Antolin preserved the shutout with a perfect ninth inning in a game that saw the Indians send just three batters over the minimum to the plate.

Ryan Goins provided all the offense, hitting a solo home run in the first inning.

Roster Notes: Ryan Tepera was promoted to Toronto, taking Danny Barnes’s spot while Junior Lake was also called up to replace Jose Bautista on the 25-man roster.

 
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7, Bowie Baysox 4
Jays’ #1 prospect (according to MLB.com) Richard Urena set a record for triples in a game for the Fisher Cats with three as he led the ‘Cats to a 7-4 win over the Bowie Baysox. Urena scored all three times and drove in a run to bump his average since joining the Double-A club to .433. Emilio Guerrero was 2/4 with a double and Roemon Fields was 1/4 with a run and his 39th stolen base, nabbing the base off Chris O’Brien, the brother of Bluefield Blue Jays’ Cam O’Brien. Shane Opitz also contributed with a two-run home run and Dwight Smith, Jr. was 1/4 with a double, a walk and two RBI.

Wilmer Font had a solid start, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks (including a solo home run) over six innings with eight strikeouts. John Anderson allowed a run on four hits in two innings, striking out two in his first outing since he returned from the DL. In his first Double-A outing, Alonzo Gonzalez posted an infinty ERA, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks, facing just three batters. Chris Smith struck out two in the ninth but allowed one of the two runners he inherited from Gonzalez to score.

Dunedin Blue Jays 4, Daytona Tortugas 5
In Game 1 of a double header against the Daytona Tortugas, the Blue Jays couldn’t capitalize on three Daytona errors and lost 5-4. Sean Reid-Foley was on the mound, but allowed all five of the Tortugas’ runs, giving up seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Chris Rowley relieved him and provided four innings of stellar relief, allowing just two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Gunnar Heidt had a two-hit game, going 2/3 with a double, a run and an RBI while D.J. Davis was on twice with a single and a walk, scoring a run.

Dunedin Blue Jays 7, Daytona Tortugas 2
The result of Game 2 of Dunedin’s double header against the Daytona Tortugas had a much more positive outcome for the Jays. Fueled by a grand slam by Ryan McBroom and a solo shot by Anthony Alford, the Blue Jays rolled to a 7-2 win. Both McBroom and Alford were 2/4 and McBroom drove in four runs and scored twice while Alford drove in just the one run. Jonathan Davis was 2/3 with a walk and a triple, scoring twice and Danny Jansen was 1/2 with a walk and an RBI.

Jon Harris had a very solid game for the Blue Jays, going the distance and giving up two runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings.

Vancouver Canadians 2, Everett AquaSox 7
The Canadians got out to a solid start, scoring in the bottom of the first inning but there was very little offense the rest of the way as they fell to the Everett AquaSox 7-2. T.J. Zeuch started for Vancouver and struck out six over five innings but he allowed three runs on eight hits to take the loss. Nate Abel gave up two runs on two hits and a walk over two innings and Jackson McClelland allowed two more runs on four hits and a walk with a strikeout over another two innings.

Jacob Anderson drove in a run , going 1/3 with a walk and Cavan Biggio hit a triple.

Bluefield Blue Jays 11, Pulaski Yankees 1
Kyle Weatherly had a very strong outing for Bluefield, going six innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits with seven strikeouts to go to 4-0 on the season. Kelyn Jose followed and didn’t give up a hit in two innings, walking one and striking out three while Chris Hall finished the game with a hitless, scoreless ninth.

Lance Jones had three hits for the Blue Jays, scoring once, while Ridge Smith drove in four runs with a triple and a home run. Javier Monzon continues to be hot, going 2/3 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two. Bradley Jones hit his team-leading eighth home run, driving in three runs and going 2/5 with two runs. Juandy Mendoza also hit a home run, going 1/4 with the solo blast.

Player of the Game: Kyle Weatherly, Bradley Jones and Ridge Smith

Roster Notes: Luke Gillingham was placed on the military leave list.


GCL Blue Jays 7, GCL Yankees West 4
The GCL Blue Jays won their 30th game of the season (with just eight losses), beating the GCL Yankees West club 7-4. The offense led the way with three players breaking out with three-hit games. Kevin Vicuna hit a triple among his three hits, driving in two, scoring three times and stealing a base. Norberto Obeso pushed his batting average to .340 with a 3/3 game that included two walks and two RBI while Antony Fuentes was 3/5 with a run, a stolen base and an RBI. Sterling Guzman was 2/5 with an RBI as well.

Wilfri Aleton was the starter and he allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings with three strikeouts. Jose Nova got into trouble in the sixth, allowing a run on two hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning but Jared Carkuff stranded two runners and went another two innings, giving up two hits and striking out two. William Ouellette notched his first professional save, giving up a hit and a walk in one inning with a strikeout.

DSL Blue Jays 3, DSL Reds 4
The DSL Blue Jays gave up three runs in the first and worked their way back to tie it in the bottom of the seventh but the Reds came back with one more in the eighth to claim a 4-3 victory. Claudio Galva started and gave up three runs on two hits and three walks in the first inning, leaving with two on and two outs. Pedro Loficial got out of the inning without further damage and pitched 3 1/3 frames in total, giving up just one hit and three walks with four strikeotus. Newly signed 19-year-old Danilo Manzueta allowed the winning run, taking the loss in his first professional appearance after giving up one run on two hits and a walk in three innings with one strikeout. Elio Silva threw two frames without giving up a hit or walk and struck out two.

Yeison Estevez had three hits and an RBI while Aldo Ovando (2/4, RBI) and Jose Theran (2/5, RBI) had two hits each. Victor Figuereo was on base four times with a triple and three walks.
