O'Halloran impresses at Southern California showcase

Ryan O’Halloran made an impression on the west coast.

SS O’Halloran (Mississauga, Ont.) attended the eighth annual Under Armour Southern California Classic Underclass showcase. 

He was clocked with a 6.84 60-yard dash, tied for the eighth fastest of the players from the 64-team tournament who completed. The 6-foot, 150-pounder was clocked with raw velocity of 84 MPH across the infield.

O’Halloran was 3-for-10 with a pair of RBIs for the South Bay Saints, 

In the opener, O’Halloran had one hit in three trips as the South Bay Saints dropped a 7-0 decision to Saddleback 2018 at the University of La Verne.    

Next, O’Halloran was 1-for-3 as South Bay fell 1-0 to TBC JAXX at Citrus College. 

And in the finale, O’Halloran was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs as the Saints and Headfirst Baseball battled to an 8-8 tie at Citrus College. His father, Greg O’Halloran played on the same Citrus diamond for Orange Coast College until the Toronto Blue Jays drafted him in the 32nd round of the 1988 amateur draft. He made the majors with the 1994 Florida Marlins.

Palos Verdes High School coach Murphy Su’a, who ran the California State University Dominguez Hills Toros from 2007-14, coached the Saints. At Dominguez, Su’a coached outfielder Kevin Pillar, now of the Blue Jays.  

Su’a caught for the 1979 rookie-class Pioneer League Lethbridge Dodgers which featured future majors leaguers Candy Maldonado, Greg Brock, Morris Madden, and Rich Rodas. He also has his ACTRA card and played Angels slugger Dick Bortner in the movie Talent for thhe Game.

This summer Greg O’Halloran took his Etobicoke Rangers to the University of Cincinnati Flames Tournament of Champions and needing help added Nolan Braga and Jake McKenna from California. 3B Braga ran a 6.78 60, while 1B McKenna was clocked at 88 MPH.

This fall Ryan O’Halloran is playing for the Ontario Terriers 18U and coach Dean Dicenzo (Caledonia). Greg O’Halloran is helping Joe Iannuzzi (Hamilton) with the Terriers 16U team, which includes LHP Connor O’Halloran.    

College recruiters on hand at the showcase included coaches from: Academy of Art, Azusa Pacific University, Cal State Bakersfield, CSU Northridge, Citrus, College of San Mateo, Loyola Marymount University, Mt. San Antonio College, Occidental College, Pasadena City College, Pomona-PItzer College, UC irvine, UC Santa Barbara, La Verne, University of Nebraska, University of Nevada, University of Redlands, USC and Vanguard University
