Young Eyes: Picks Shields & Mets
In this new series, MLB Weekly Forecast, I look to the week ahead in Major League Baseball, with a Game of the Week pick and a Series of the Week pick. All stats are as of Sunday, May 10.
Game of the Week: (17-16) San Diego Padres (James Shields, 4-0, 4.25 ERA) vs. (17-15) Washington Nationals (Gio Gonzalez, 3-2, 3.62 ERA), Thursday
An ace-off highlights this week’s GOTW as a perfect Shields looks to give the Padres a win against the Nationals and one of their many aces, Gonzalez. The key factor in this game will be the work of the Upton brothers, Melvin Upton Jr. and Justin Upton, as they have a solid history vs. Gio and the Nats. Justin is .313 with five hits, three of those being homers vs. Gonzalez, while Melvin is hitting .280 vs. the lefty, who hits a consistent 92 on the gun. Shields, on the other hand, has an OPP AVG vs. the Nats of .176.
My pick (2-0): Shields moves to 5-0, Nats struggle to find offense.
Series of the Week: (15-15) Chicago Cubs vs. (20-11) New York Mets, Monday-Thursday
I saw this series and had one of those moments. It starts off with a bang, withJon Lester vs. Jacob deGrom on Monday, followed by the 2015 debut ofNoah Syndergaard, who had a 3-0 record to start the year in the minor leagues, who faces off against a 3-3 Jake Arrieta on Tuesday. Then, the mid-week showdown on Harvey Day between, you guessed it, Matt Harvey who faces Travis Wood, and the series rounds out with a matchup between Jon Niese and Jason Hammel. Should be a fun series to watch.
My pick (1-1): Hard to pick against Harvey, Syndergaard and deGrom, even if it is against the heavy hitting Cubs. Mets win series, 3-1.
Over-all record: (3-1).
