Jasvir Rakkar CBN’s POW, Week V
You can argue that three home runs and six RBIs — as Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC) had — was worthy.
Or you could argue that three homers and 10 RBIs — as Jamie Romak(London, Ont.) — has is enough.
Yet, it’s tough to argue with RP Jasvir Rakkar picked up a win and a save in four scoreless innings of work. With this week he ran his scoreless string to seven straight and earned him Canadian Baseball Network Player of the Week honors as the best of the 51 Canucks in the minors.
Rakkar pitched two scoreless innings for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in a 4-2 win over the Salem Red Sox before 2,025 fans at TicketReturn.com Field in Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans had offensive help from 2B Wes Darvill (Langley, BC) who hit a solo homer in the first and later singled. Both Canucks came into the Cubs fold under scouting director Tim Wilken.
Three days later Rakkar pitched a scoreless ninth and a put up a zero in the 10th in a 3-2 win over the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem.
Rakkar, signed by Cubs scout Matt Sherman, is 1-0 with a 1.37 ERA in 11 games compiling five saves. He’s walked three and struck out 14 in 19 2/3 innings, holding opponents to a .197 average.
He isn’t the first player of Indian heritage to play pro ball. Two pitchers, Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel signed minor league contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 after winning a reality TV show in India called The Million Dollar Arm.
Rakkar took the honor over Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ont.) .466 average and two RBIs; Jordan Procyshen (Calgary, Alta.) one RBI, .438, O’Neill and Romak.
