Sunday was not a day to remember watching the Blue Jays’ minor league clubs. In the four games, the teams allowed 39 runs to score and, despite scoring 19 runs of their own, none of the teams came away with a victory.
Buffalo Bisons 5, Toledo Mud Hens 8
The Bisons had a rare bullpen collapse on Sunday, wasting a very strong start by Felix Doubront who only allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three. Greg Infante thew a scoreless inning but it was the trio of Colt Hynes, Bobby Korecky and Luis Perez, who combined to allow all eight runs in the eighth inning. Hynes pitched to only two batters, allowing a hit and a run and Korecky couldn’t strand them, allowing three hits and a walk with just one out to his credit. Luis Perez came in with two runners on and allowed them both to score despite not being charged with a run of his own.
The offense had a solid game overall with ten hits including three (two singles and a double) for Chris Dickerson. Andy Burns was 2/5 with a double and a home run, driving in four runs while Sean Ochinko was 2/4.
Player of the Game: Doubront and Burns
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3, Altoona Curve 11
The Fisher Cats made three errors which didn’t help matters but starter Casey Lawrence was chased after 3 2/3 innings, allowing nine run (six earned) on 12 hits and just one walk. Cory Burns was solid, stranding two runners and pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Dustin Antolin allowed just one run and Jack Murphy made his pitching debut, allowing a run in one inning.
Matt Newman and Shane Opitz had two hits each with Newman hitting a triple and Opitz driving in a run.
Player of the Game: Newman and Opitz
Dunedin Blue Jays 4, St. Lucie Mets 7
After getting down early, the Blue Jays tried to stage a late comeback beginning in the seventh inning but couldn’t get all seven runs needed to tie the score. Derrick Loveless led the offense with a 3/4 night that included two RBI and a walk while Boomer Collins was 2/4 with a double. Starter Justin Shafer allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks in three innings and Jeremy Gabryszwski threw another three innings, allowing only one run but scattered five hits and two walks. Chad Girodo provided two innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and Jimmy Cordero finished the game, allowing two hits in the ninth. Alex Hassan was 1/5 in his Blue Jays debut.
Roster Notes: New Blue Jay Alex Hassan was assigned to Dunedin and reliever Brady Dragmire was assigned to extended spring training.
Player of the Game: Loveless
Lansing Lugnuts 7, Fort Wayne TinCaps 12
Despite scoring seven runs, the Lansing pitching staff had a bit of a collapse on Sunday, giving up 12 runs on 20 hits to Fort Wayne. Conner Greene was victimized for five runs (four earned) on nine hits in three innings, despite four strikeouts and only one walk. Starlyn Suriel, relieving him, managed just three innings of his own with six runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Colton Turner allowed a run in two innings on another four hits and Michael Kraft threw a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
Richard Urena has been red hot and he was 2/5 with two RBI while Rowdy Tellez, apparently furious that a shortstop held the team lead in home runs, tied Urena with his sixth of the year, going 1/4 with a walk and three RBI, Tim Locastro was 1/2 with two walks and an RBI and Anthony Alford was 1/3 with two walks to push his batting average to .327 and his OBP to a whopping .469.
Player of the Game: Urena and Tellez
