Blue Jays From Away

Memorial Day Monday was a lighter day for the Jays’ affiliates with the Dunedin Blue Jays having a day off to take a breath. Of the other teams, only the Lansing Lugnuts put a win on the board.

Buffalo Bisons 4, Indianapolis Indians 8
The Bisons returned home to face a tough challenge as the West Division leaders, Indianapolis came to town. Randy Wolf faced adversity for the first time in his comeback, allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks in just 2 2/3 innings. Chad Jenkins stranded a runner and went on to throw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball while Jeff Francis put another three zeroes on the board before Colt Hynes struck out the side in the ninth.

Andy Burns led the offense, going 4/5 with one RBI and Luke Scott was 3/4 with a double and an RBI. Chris Dickerson drove in two on two hits and a sac fly while Ryan Schimpf was 1/3 with a double, a walk and two runs.

Roster Notes: Kevin Nolan and Daric Barton were sent down to New Hampshire.

Player of the Game: Burns

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4, Altoona Curve 9
The Fisher Cats returned to the .500 mark after taking another loss to Altoona. Starter Taylor Cole got stung for five runs but battled through five innings, allowing a home run as part of 11 hits and only struck out two Curve. Scott Barnes allowed two home runs, accounting for three runs over two innings and Danny Barnes allowed a run in the eighth. Greg Burke pitched a scoreless ninth.

The offense 13 hits but could only translate them into four runs. Shane Opitz was the top man with a 4/4 game that included two doubles and two runs scored. Jorge Flores pushed his batting average on the season to .323 with a pair of singles while Ian Parmley (2/4, 2 RBI) and K.C. Hobson (2/4, 2 2B) also had a pair of hits. Daric Barton hit a home run and took a walk in his New Hampshire debut.

Roster Notes: Nolan and Barton were sent to New Hampshire and Andy Fermin was placed on the DL.

Lansing Lugnuts 11, Fort Wayne TinCaps 5
The Lugnuts took advantage of nine walks issued by Fort Wayne pitchers and added eight hits to come up with 11 runs on the game as the offense led the way in another Lugnuts victory. Anthony Alford won the prize of taking the most walks with four of his own, scoring all four times and going 0/1 on the game. While his batting average slid to .324, his OBP soared to .481 on the season as the former football star is showing some remarkable poise at the plate in his first full season in baseball. Ryan McBroom also took three walks but didn’t score. Richard Urena continues to be hot as he took over the team lead in home runs again at seven with a two-run blast in the eighth inning He had a single and a double to go with the home run and took a walk, scoring four times. Rowdy Tellez picked up four RBI to lead the team with 36 with two doubles, going 2/5.

Prospect Sean Reid-Foley got the start and, despite some struggles early (allowing three runs in the first inning), made his longest start this season, throwing five innings with seven strikeouts. Chase Mallard earned the save, going four innings and allowing two runs on seven hits.
