The revamped East York Bulldogs wrapped up a very impressive weekend with a 13-12 extra-inning victory over the Etobicoke Rangers to capture their first Vaughan tournament title in their existence.
The Bulldogs got off to a bit of a slow start as Marc Walton of the Oakville A’s was able to keep the bats at bay in a 6-2 loss. After that East York was able to start to put it together. Saturday morning they defeated the Erindale Cardinals 11-1 behind the great pitching of Dave Anderson and that afternoon defeated league mates the Pickering Red Sox 6-5 with Mark Sirkorski picking up the win on the hill.
At 2-1, the Bulldogs finished second in Pool B setting up a semi-final matchup with the host Vaughan Vikings squad. Mark Gibbs grabbed the start and shut down the Viking bats in a 4-0 victory. In the semi-final, East York locked horns with the Brampton Royals who put together a very nice run this year. This was a very well played and entertaining game that ended with a 7-5 victory in favour of the Bulldogs.
In the final, East York jumped out to a big lead on Etobicoke building a 12-3 lead after three innings. The Rangers, winners of eight straight heading into this game, kept chipping away and tied the game 12-12 in the seventh. In extras, Quinn Cumming for East York and Bryan Vardzel for Etobicoke traded scoreless innings. It wasn’t until the 12th inning when Kyle Moloney hit a walk-off single for the margin of victory.
Three out of the four semi-finalists were COBA Major Teams (Brampton, Oakville, and Etobicoke) while Burlington also advanced to the quarter-finals before being bounced by Oakville 4-2 in an extra inning.
