Well, let’s compare father and son for a moment.

Joe Siddall was a pro player.

And now is son Brett is a pro player.

Joe spent one year at Central Michigan before being signed by the Montreal Expos as a free agent in 1987, four years before Canadians were eligible for the draft.

Brett was selected in the 13th round last month by the Oakland A’s and scout Matt Higginson in the 13th round from Mike McRae’s Canisius Golden Griffs.

Joe spent his first pro season playing for manager Roger LaFrancois with the class-A Jamestown Expos.

Brett is playing for the rookie-class Arizona League Athletics.

Joe had 38 hits in 53 games as a rookie when he was teammates with Marquis Grissom, Wil Cordero and Tim Laker.

Brett had seven hits this week giving him 16 in his first 13 games.

So, father and son are close in many aspects ... except the son has one edge: Brett batted .412 (7-for-17 with an RBI) to have the best week of the 87 Canadians in the minors. Brett wins the Canadian Baseball Network Player of the Week honors for Week XIV. Now, Pop never accomplished that.

Of course, Pop also has bragging rights in that he gets to spent a whole season travelling with Jerry Howarth, the veteran Blue Jays broadcaster.

How Brett’s week that was went as he:

_ Playing left field he doubled twice and knocked in a run in a 12-8 loss to the Cubs at Fitch Park. Marc Berube (Trois Pistoles, Que.) pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit.

_ Playing right field he had two hits including a double in a 6-1 loss to the Reds at Goodyear Ballpark.

_ As the DH, Siddall singled and walked twice in a 6-2 win over the White Sox at Camelback Ranch.  

_ Playing right field, he singled in five at-bats in a 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks at Fitch Park.

_ Pinch hitting, he singled in a 5-4 defeat against the Giants at the Giants Baseball Complex. 

Eight draft picks from June were activated this week: Isaac Anesty (Reds), Jeff Degano (Yankees),
Phil Diedrick (Nationals), Michael Foster (Cubs), Miles Gordon (Reds), Reign Letkeman (Rays), Chris Shaw (Orioles) and Mike Soroka (Braves) while Kurtis Horne was activated by the New York Mets at Rookie Class GCL Mets.

After missing the entire 2014 season due to injury, it would seem logical that expectations for Travis Seabrooke this year would be somewhat limited.  However, the Peterborough native has shown signs that he has made a strong recovery, and the results have been very positive thus far. On July 12th in a 9-3 victory over Brooklyn Cyclones he pitched five innings, surrendered five base hits and two earned runs, while striking out two Cyclones hitters, to earn his second win of the season. His overall record with Aberdeen in Single A New York - Penn League is now 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA.

Karl Gelinas continues his excellent performance as the ace of the Capitales starting staff, with another great outing this week. On July 14th in a 2-0 win over Garden State Grays he tossed seven shutout innings, gave up only one base hit and no runs, while striking out nine Garden State batters. In his last two starts, covering a total of seventeen innings, he’s allowed just four base hits and no runs while striking out seventeen hitters. His overall record with Quebec now stands at 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA.  The seven wins and his 57 strikeouts place him second in the Can Am League in these categories, and his 2.27 ERA is lowest amongst all pitchers.

Ethan Elias continues to impress this season, and this week made another excellent start for the Cougars. On July 10th in an 8-3 win over Cedar Rapids Kernels he pitched six strong innings, surrendered seven base hits and only one earned run while striking out three Cedar Rapids batters, to earn the win. This outing improved his
record with Kane County in the Single A Midwest League, to 9-3 with a 2.64 ERA. His nine wins place him second in the Midwest League, only his Canadian colleague Shane Dawson who has 11 wins for Lansing Lugnuts, has more.

Emulating his teammate Marc Gelinas, the recognized ace of the Quebec staff is not easy to do, but this week Mark Hardy made a very nice effort. On July 10th in a 5-1 victory over Garden State Grays he tossed seven strong innings, gave up just four base hits and one earned run, while striking out nine Grays batters to earn the win. This outing improved his overall IND Can Am league record to 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA.
