July 6 Minor League Report
By Jay Blue
Blue Jays from Away
Ryan Schimpf had another monster day in Double-A as the Fisher Cats, Bisons, and the three lowest minor league teams won.

Buffalo Bisons 6, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 2
Matt Boyd made his first start in Buffalo and showed the same mix of volatility and brilliance that he showed in his first outing in Toronto. Boyd gave up a home run but struck out eight and only walked one in seven innings of two-run, six-hit ball but did get more ground outs than fly outs. Blake McFarland and Bobby Korecky each gave up a hit in their inning of work but that was all as the Bisons cruised to a win.

Brad Glenn was 3/4 with a double but Melky Mesa was on base four times, going 2/3 with two doubles, two walks, two RBI and a run scored. Luke Scott and Andy Burns each hit a home run for their only hit of the night and Matt Hauge and Jonathan Diaz each had two hits.

Player of the Game: Mesa and Boyd

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 9, New Britain Rock Cats 1
Lefty John Anderson was excellent, holding the New Britain to just one run over seven, giving up seven hits and three walks while striking out three. Anderson picked up his fourth win on the season and was relieved by Jimmy Cordero and Chad Girodo who each faced the minimum number of batters in his inning of work.

Ryan Schimpf drove the offense, going 3/4 with two doubles and a home run and driving in five runs. Ian Parmley continues to mash Double-A pitching, going 3/4 with a triple and an RBI while the top three batters in the lineup, Dalton Pompey, Jon Berti and Dwight Smith, Jr., had two hits each.

Player of the Game: Schimpf and Anderson

Dunedin Blue Jays 1, Lakeland Flying Tigers 2
Completing a suspended game that went to an insane 21 innings, the Blue Jays dropped the marathon on a leadoff home run given up by Alonzo Gonzalez. Anthony Alford led the 13-hit offense with four, including a double while Rowdy Tellez was 3/7 with a double and two walks. Emilio Guerrero was 2/9 and Martin Medina was 2/8.

Sean Reid-Foley went five innings in his FSL debut, giving up just two hits and striking out two with no walks while Jeremy Gabryszwski pitched a game of his own, giving up the one run in six innings on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Brady Dragmire struck out six in three innings of relief and Alberto Tirado had two strikeouts in two innings with one walk and no hits allowed. Matt Dermody followed with four scoreless innings, walking none and striking out four, giving up four hits before Gonzalez entered the game to give up a home run to his first batter.

Roster Notes: Reid-Foley, Gabryszwski and Alford

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Lakeland Flying Tigers 9
Obviously, the Lakeland Flying Tigers weren’t exhausted after the two-day marathon game and beat up on Jairo Labourt to the tune of eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits over five innings. Jackson Lowery and John Kravetz were parachuted in from the GCL club to give the depleted pitching staff a break and combined for three innings of one-run ball with Lowery allowing the run on three hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings while Kravetz stranded two runners before pitching the scoreless eighth.

The offense had eight hits including two from Mitch Nay (who also walked) and L.B. Dantzler.

Roster Notes: Jackson Lowery and John Kravetz were assigned to the Dunedin Blue Jays. Luis Santos was placed on the seven-day DL.

Player of the Game: Nay and Dantzler

Lansing Lugnuts 5, Great Lakes Loons 9
In a running theme from Monday’s games, Starlyn Suriel got beaten up although his defense let him down, causing four of the nine runs he gave up to be unearned. Suriel ended up surrendering five earned runs (nine in total) on 11 hits but only one walk with four strikeouts in five innings. Mark Biggs was strong in relief, going two scoreless innings and giving up just two walks. Phil Kish finished the game with two more innings, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Jason Leblebijian had a rare oh-fer and contributed an error while D.J. Davis made another two errors, drove in a run with a sac fly and struck out twice. Ryan McBroom contributed on the offense, going 3/5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs while Dawel Lugo (2/5, RBI), Michael De La Cruz (2/3, BB, 2B, RBI) and Christian Vazquez (2/4) all had two-hit games. Boomer Collins also brought home a run on a sac fly.

Player of the Game: McBroom

Vancouver Canadians 5, Eugene Emeralds 6
The Canadians lost in a walkoff in the bottom of the ninth inning as Joey Aquino surrendered an unearned run after walking the leadoff batter and having two fielding errors by outfielders on back-to-back batters. First-round pick Jonathan Harris made the start but only went two-plus innings, walking four and striking out four but only giving up one hit before being yanked from the game, likely due to a very strict pitch count for the remainder of the season. Jon Wandling allowed four more runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and two walks and striking out four. Joe Claver and Andrew Case each retired one batter, getting out of the eighth inning but Case allowed one of Wandling’s two runners to score. Joey Aquino relieved him and faced the three batters in the ninth before the game was ended.

Sean Hurley hit another home run, his fifth, going 2/4, and Connor Panas was 2/2 with a double and two walks.

Roster Notes: LHP Daniel Young was assigned to Vancouver.

Player of the Game: Panas and Hurley

Bluefield Blue Jays 10, Burlington Royals 6
The Blue Jays exploded for 10 runs supporting Zakery Wasilewsky and making him a winner for the first time this year. Four Blue Jays had two hits apiece but it was Juan Tejada who found his stride, launching his first two home runs of the year and driving in four runs while scoring three. D.J. McKnight was 2/2 before coming out of the game for Freddy Rodriguez (who was 1/2 with a walk) while Rodrigo Orozco pushed his average to .370 with a 2/5 game, scoring a run and Deiferson Barreto was also 2/5 and was caught stealing and scored. Nick Sinay was 1/3 with a double, driving in a run, scoring one and stealing a base.

Angel Perdomo started the game and gave up one run on four hits and a walk, striking out two before Grayson huffman came in to blow the save, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in 1 1/3 innings. Wasilewski picked up the win but actually allowed two of Huffman’s inherited runners to score as well as an unearned run of his own before securing the game with 2 2/3 innings.

Player of the Game: Tejada

GCL Blue Jays 5, GCL Phillies 4
The Blue Jays got excellent games from Denis Diaz, the starting pitcher, and Kalik May, the centre fielder, finishing the game with a 5-4 win. Diaz held the GCL Phillies off the board for six innings, giving up just three hits and striking out six without walking anyone. Kelyn Jose gave up three runs but only one was earned over two innings and Mike Estevez allowed a run in his one inning of work.

May led the offense with a 4/5 game, stealing a base, scoring twice and committing a throwing error while Jesus Severino was 2/4 with a run and a throwing error of his own. Ryan Hissey, DHing, was 1/3 with two RBI and a walk.

Roster Notes: Jackson Lowery and John Kravetz were assigned to the Florida State League.

Player of the Game: Diaz and May

DSL Blue Jays 13, DSL Reds 4
With 13 runs on 13 hits and eight walks, the Blue Jays had an easy game of it against the DSL Reds on Monday. Jesus Navarro was 3/4 with a double, an RBI, two runs and a stolen base while three players had two hits. Kevin Vicuna was 2/5 with a triple, two runs, a walk and an RBI but made his 17th error of the season on a throw. Enmanuel Moreta was 1/3 with an RBI and two walks and Cristian Peguero was 2/4 with a double and an RBI, scoring twice. Manuel Herazo was on base four times with three walks and a double, scoring three times and driving in a run. Norberto Obeso continues to be an offensive generator, going 1/3 with a run, a walk, a sacrifice fly and three RBI. Francisco Rodriguez also walked twice, going 1/3 with an RBI.

Jose Nova made the start and went seven scoreless innings, giving up just four hits without walking anyone and striking out one. Manuel Dominguez allowed three runs in just 2/3 of an inning while Alvaro Galindo stranded two runners but allowed an unearned run of his own in 1 1/3 innings.

Player of the Game: Navarro and Nova
