Laurier splits pair with Queen's

Andrew Ziedins pitched a five-hit shut out for the Laurier Hawks in a 4-0 win over the Laurier Hawks.


Laurier kicked off its conference season with a doubleheader at home against Queen’s Golden Gaels and coach Jeff Skellhorne-Gross on Saturday. The Hawks split the DH losing game one 5-3 in 10 innings and bouncing back to win game two 4-0. 

And Sunday game in Toronto against U of Toronto was rained out.

Game One - Queen’s 5 Laurier 3 - 10 innings
Queen’s scored two runs in the first inning (one unearned) off ace Jordan Petruska. Laurier pushed a run across in the fifth to make it 2-1 but the Gaels extended the lead in the eighth inning. Laurier tied the game at 3-3. 2B Robbie Cant came up with the bases loaded, two out and the game tied. he had a long at-bat and eventually ended up scorching a line drive down the first base line that their first baseman make a great catch to end the inning and snuff out the rally. Queen’s got two in its half of the 10th on amistake. Laurier left 15 men on base, so the Hawks certainly had their chances to win this one.

After a disappointing start to the conference schedule, Laurier needed a strong game to salvage a split. Veteran Andrew Ziedins was dominant in a complete game effort. The Hawks had chances to break the game open, but settled for single runs in four different innings.
