Jays add Storen, move speedy Revere to Nationals
By Bob Elliott
Arrow-shooter Fernando Rodney?
Forget about it.
The Blue Jays added an experienced closer in Drew Storen Friday night dealing from a position of strength moving left fielder Ben Revere to the Washington Nationals.
Storen has 95 career saves including 43 in 2011. Revere and a player to be named go to D.C. while the Jays gets Storen and cash.
Storen will earn $8.8 Million US this season, while Revere is expected to earn $6.7M in salary arbitration. The salaries will come out even on the books as the teams will split the difference.
Storen was successful on 29 of 34 save opportunities (85%) before Jonathan Papelbon arrived in a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies as Storen was demoted to a set-up role.
Do the Jays go with Roberto Osuna with 20 career saves (20-for-23, 87%) or Storen to get the final three outs. The former Stanford Cardinal is 94-for-116 (82%) lifetime.
Which ever path the Jays take: Osuna closing with Storen working the eighth or Storen closing and Osuna setting him up, the Jays bullpen is deeper today than it was two days ago.
And in left field the Jays can turn to either Michael Saunders of Victoria, B.C. or Mississauga’s Dalton Pompey could take over for Revere in left. Saunders (injured) and Pompey (lack of production) combined to start 33 games last year,
Revere, 27, had 22 doubles, seven triples, two homers and 45 RBIs in 152 games with the Phillies and the Jays. He stole 31 of 38 bases with a .719 OPS.
Storen, 28, was 2-2, with a 3.44 ERA in 58 games, walking 16 and striking out 67 in 55 innings.
The trade was reported by the major league leader in information, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
