Ontario Terriers and Junior National Team alum Ben Abram (Georgetown, Ont.) has been named to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
The 6-foot-8 right-hander was one of 13 University of Oklahoma baseball student-athletes named to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Team. Five Sooners were first-team selections and eight were second-team honourees.
To qualify, student-athletes had to maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or over the two previous semesters.
On top of his strong academic year, Abram also excelled on the field in his sophomore collegiate campaign with the Sooners, posting a 0.90 ERA, while striking out 13 batters in 10 innings in four appearances before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 20-year-old Canuck also enjoyed a strong freshman season with the Sooners in 2019 when he won six games and struck out 52 in 63 2/3 in 15 appearances.
Abram opted to head to Oklahoma rather than sign with the San Diego Padres who selected him in the 37th round of the 2018 MLB draft.
Prior to his college career, Abram honed his skills with the Ontario Terriers under coaches Dean Dicenzo (East Hamilton, Ont.) and Scott Vandevalk (Georgetown, Ont.) and with the Junior National Team, coached by Greg Hamilton (Ottawa, Ont.).
He also toed the rubber for the DBacks Langley Blaze and Georgetown Eagles for coaches Doug Mathieson, Jamie Bodaly and Ian McLaughlin.
