Baseball Canada

Day one of the 2022 Canada Summer Games was packed with action featuring seven games in between the two official venues in Welland Stadium in Welland, and Oakes Park in Niagara Falls.

Day 1 Recap

Ontario 10 - 0 Saskatchewan (Welland Stadium)

Mac Robertson (Toronto, Ont.) and Owen Slater (Bradford, Ont.) shut out Team Saskatchewan allowing only four hits while striking out six combined.

Ontario got off to a hot start in the first inning with a Brendan Lawson (Havelock, Ont.) two-run shot to give his squad the early lead. Team-O never looked back and continued to play a clean baseball game committing no errors and combining for 10 runs on 10 hits offensively, two of them for extra bases.

British Columbia 13 - 3 Nova Scotia (Oakes Park)

Team BC had everything working for them on Sunday morning in their opening match-up at the Canada Summer Games against Nova Scotia.

British Columbia's offence tallied 13 runs on 13 hits while receiving seven free passes. However, the story of the game was British Columbia's starting pitcher Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) who worked a complete game start, allowing only one run in three hits, striking out four as BC won big against Nova Scotia.   

New Brunswick 2 - 4 Québec (Welland Stadium)

Team Québec stole the late lead to defeat Team New Brunswick 4-2. Both teams had a hot start offensively and were able to scrap one run against each other's starters. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that Québec took the lead on an RBI ground out by Deiten Lachance (Sherbrooke, Que.), followed by a Anthony Clavet (Quebec City, Que.) RBI single. Québec would extend their lead scoring one more in the bottom of the sixth to reach the final score. 

Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue (St-Pie, Que.) led his team to victory on the mound, making Canada Summer Games history, with a 13-strikeout performance. The left-hander wrote his name in the CSG history books with a strong five inning outing where he only permitted one run on four hits while issuing two free passes. With his 13 strikeouts, Quebec's ace breaks the single-game record previously set by Scott Diamond (Guelph, Ont.) from Team Ontario who struck out 12 in the 2005 tournament.

Alberta 8 - 3 Prince Edward Island (Oakes Park)

Team Alberta took an early lead against PEI and never looked back to secure an 8 - 3 win in their first match-up of the tournament.

Leo Cote (Okotoks, Alta.) got Alberta's offence started with a two-run shot in the top of the second inning on a line drive to left field. Michael Yusypchuk (Edmonton, Alta.) was the starter on the mound for Alberta. He went six strong innings and struck out four while only allowing one hit. 

Saskatchewan 12 - 3 Nova Scotia (Welland Stadium)

Nova Scotia watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover, dropping their second game of the competition 12-3 to Team Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewanians broke it open in the second inning scoring six runs to extend their lead. The offence was led by Callum Hollinger (Carnduff, Sask. and Oakland Flodell (Clavet, Sask.) who had a hit and three RBIs each. Merek Yeager (Muenster, Sask.) took the win surrendering zero runs on three hits over four innings, striking out five and walking one.

Newfoundland & Labrador 0 - 10 Manitoba (Oakes Park)

Manitoba defeated Newfoundland & Labrador in their first matchup of their 2022 Canada Games competition as two pitchers combined for a 10-0 shutout.

Manitoba tallied two runs in the second, four in the third and four more in the fourth. Matthew Thompson (Winnipeg, Man.) and Jack Lussier (Winnipeg, Man.) were the two pitchers to toe the rubber for Manitoba, combining for six strikeouts and only one walk for the shutout. 

British Columbia 7 - 3 Ontario (Welland Stadium)

British Columbia defeated Ontario in a back-and-forth contest in the final game of Day 1 at Welland Stadium.

Ontario got to a hot start offensively led by Brendan Lawson (Havelock, Ont.) who again dispatched a solo home run in his first plate appearance of the game, and had himself a night at the dish, going 3-for-3. However, BC would come right back in the top of the second, taking advantage of the first of three errors by Ontario, and scoring three runs to regain the lead. Noah Bourgeois (Surrey, BC) was the starter for Team BC working the full seven innings for his club, allowing only three runs, despite giving up 10 hits.
