For the first time since 2019, the best 17U players from 10 provinces will gather for a national championship tournament.
Typically known as the Canada Cup, this year the tournament will be part of the Canada Summer Games being held in Niagara Falls, Ont.
The last edition in 2019 was held in Regina, Sask., and saw Nova Scotia defeat Ontario 3-2 in the gold medal game and British Columbia upend Quebec for bronze.
Nova Scotia featured current college standouts in Sulllivan County Community College left-handed pitcher/outfielder Layton Cuvilier (Hantsport, N.S.) and Panola College right-handed pitcher Duncan McLaughlin (Dartmouth, N.S.).
The 2018 tournament was hosted in Moncton and Dieppe, N.B. Team Ontario took home the title thanks to a 9-5 victory over British Columbia. Two players from that championship-winning team are currently competing at the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. Left-handed pitcher Campbell Ellis (Georgetown, Ont.) has been a key contributor for the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams and southpaw Connor O’Halloran (Mississauga, Ont.) has made 16 starts for the Michigan Wolverines in 2022. Nova Scotia took care of host New Brunswick for bronze.
This year’s tournament will be hosted at Welland Stadium in Welland, Ont., and Oakes Park in Niagara Falls, Ont.
