REGINA - Action got started on Wednesday at the BIGS Seeds Baseball Canada Cup at Optimist and Currie Field in Regina, Saskatchewan. The tournament will see the best 17U males from across Canada compete.

Québec and Saskatchewan kicked off the tournament. Québec won due to mercy rule in the fifth inning after a dominant 10-0 performance. Yohann Dessureault of Québec tossed all five innings while keeping Saskatchewan off the scoreboard and striking out four.

British Columbia walked off Ontario 6-5 to secure their first win of the tournament. It was a close game as the two squads were tied through all seven innings of play. Ontario scored twice more in the top of the eighth before giving up three runs, including a fatal error in the outfield on a fly ball by Russell Young of BC.

Strong pitching on both sides led to a close game between Nova Scotia and Alberta. A clutch single by Noah Boutilier drove in the winning run for Nova Scotia in the eighth and they held on to win 2-1.

Manitoba blew out Newfoundland and won 13-3 by mercy rule in the fifth inning. Despite going down by three in the first, they went on an offensive run which won them the game. Jordan Lussier had three RBI on two hits for Manitoba.

Québec failed to gain a lead in a close game against Ontario. They trailed 5-4 entering the final inning, but a late Ontario rally the top of the seventh and a lack of clutch offence resulted in a 10-4 win for Ontario. Owen Caissie had two hits while drawing two walks for Ontario.

A defensive battle between British Columbia and Saskatchewan ended the first day of action. Saskatchewan ultimately won 2-1 despite a single BC run in the top of the seventh.
