Milwaukee Brewers’ prized prospect Tyler Black will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks with a hamate fracture in his right hand.

Curt Hogg, of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, shared news of the injury on X this morning.

Black (Stouffville, Ont.), who had been one of the Brewers’ final cuts earlier this week, was set to start the year with the triple-A Nashville Sounds.

The 24-year-old infielder made his big-league debut with the Brewers on April 30, 2024 and promptly doubled in his first at bat. In all, Black went 10-for-49 (.204 batting average) with three stolen bases and seven walks in 18 big league games last season. He spent the bulk of the year with the triple-A Sounds. In 102 contests with the Sounds, he belted 14 home runs, stole 20 bases and registered a .375 on-base percentage (OBP).

That season came on the heels of an outstanding 2023 campaign that he split between the double-A Biloxi Shuckers and the triple-A Sounds, batting a combined .284 with a .417 OBP in 123 games. The Toronto Mets and Butler Prospects alum had 25 doubles, 12 triples, 18 home runs, 73 RBIs, 105 runs and 55 stolen bases. His combined 12 triples were the most in the affiliated minor league ranks and he also topped Brewers’ minor leaguers in runs, stolen bases and extra-base hits (55).

For his efforts, Black was named a Southern League All-Star and the Milwaukee Brewers co-Minor League Player of the Year. He also won the Canadian Baseball Network’s 2023 Randy Echlin Award, as top Canuck hitter in the affiliated minor league ranks.

Selected 33rd overall by the Brewers in the 2021 MLB draft out of Wright State University, Black, who’s the son of legendary Canadian sports broadcaster Rod Black, is entering his fifth season in the Brewers’ organization.

In 2022, his first full professional season, he batted .281 and posted a .406 OBP in 64 games with the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
