Needing to clear a spot on their 25-man roster for Francisco Liriano, the Toronto Blue Jays optioned right-handed reliever Leonel Campos to triple-A Buffalo on Friday.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Campos was recalled to the Blue Jays for a third time this season. In five big league appearances in 2017, the 29-year-old right-hander has posted an ERA of 2.25 with nine strikeouts against only three walks over eight innings.

Barring an injury, Campos will be unavailable to the Blue Jays for no less than 10 days in accordance with Major League Baseball’s strict roster regulations.

Having formally hit the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation on May 11, Liriano missed a grand total of 20 games while rehabbing from his injury. Over that stretch, the hard-throwing southpaw threw multiple side sessions and made one start with the Bisons, striking out seven batters over 4 1/3 innings.

Ironically, it was Campos who was originally recalled when Liriano was first sidelined in May.

With seven major league starts under his belt in 2017, Liriano currently sports an ERA of 6.35 to go along with a WHIP of 1.906 across 28 1/3 frames.

He'll be tested early as the former All-Star is set to face the American League East-leading New York Yankees at Rogers Centre on Friday.
