After using four relievers in Friday night’s 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Toronto Blue Jays have called up left-handed pitching prospect Nick Allgeyer from triple-A Buffalo.
In a corresponding move, RHP David Phelps (lat strain) has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
A 12th-round draft pick of the Blue Jays in 2018, Allgeyer, 25, has appeared in parts of three minor league seasons. In a combined 40 games, the 6-foot-3 native of St. Louis, Mo., has gone 11-8 with an ERA of 3.56, striking out 145 batters and issuing 42 walks.
Including his two appearances with the Bisons in 2021, 30 of his professional appearances have come as a starter.
MLB Pipeline had Allgeyer listed as Toronto’s No. 30 prospect prior to Saturday’s transaction.
Phelps allowed just one earned run on eight hits in his 11 appearances prior to landing on the IL on May 6.
With Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo calling the strain “significant” during his pre-game availability on Friday, the earliest Phelps will be eligible to return to the active roster is July 5.
