TORONTO -- After departing the team following a four-inning performance against the Washington Nationals on Sunday, Blue Jays hurler Sam Gaviglio has been formally placed on the paternity list.
In a corresponding move, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was recalled from triple-A Buffalo to claim Gaviglio's vacancy on the roster, and will be available off the bench on Tuesday.
Gurriel Jr. has hit .325 (13-for-40) with two home runs and seven runs scored over his last 10 assignments with the Herd. Through 39 games at the triple-A level in 2018, the right-handed product of Sancti Spiritus, Cuba has slashed .307/.333/.490 with 15 extra-base hits over 153 at-bats.
The slick-fielding infielder's second go around with the team may be of the short-lived variety as, per Major League Baseball, eligible players are entitled to miss only three games while stationed on the paternity list.
Although Gaviglio, who has amassed a 1-2 record to go along with a 3.98 earned run average through six starts with the Blue Jays in 2018, will rejoin the team in Anaheim on the weekend, his spot in Toronto's starting rotation could be in jeopardy.
Placed on the disabled list with right-shoulder fatigue on May 11t, Marcus Stroman has deemed himself ready to return after throwing a simulated game in New Hampshire earlier this week.
"I’m back," wrote Stroman on Twitter Monday night. "Next start in the big leagues with the squad. Shout to everyone who helped throughout the process!"
