The Toronto Blue Jays have called up C Caleb Joseph from the club’s taxi squad.

In a corresponding move, C Reese McGuire has been optioned to Toronto’s alternate training site.

Through parts of six Major League seasons, Joseph, 34, has slashed .223/.270/.350 with 93 extra-base hits across 1255 at bats. On the defensive side, the former seventh-round draft pick has thrown out 84 base runners in 264 steal attempts (32%), and is well regarded for his ability to call a game and work with a diverse pitching staff.

With just three hits on the season (41 AB), McGuire was one half of a Blue Jays catching tandem that’s combined to hit just .126 in 2020. Additionally, the 25-year-old Washington native has made three errors behind the dish, the latest of which led to Boston plating the winning run in Friday’s 3-2 loss at Fenway Park.

To clear a spot for Joseph on the 40-man roster, RHP Ken Giles (forearm) has been transferred from the 40 to the 45-day Injured List.
