TORONTO -- A day removed from dealing Steve Pearce to the Boston Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays have called up INF/OF Darnell Sweeney.

Sweeney, 27, owns a career slash line of .269/.341/.423 through 733 games as a professional, 37 of which have been spent at the big league level as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015.

A 13th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012, the switch-hitting product of Hollywood, Fla., has hit .232 (36-for-155) with 18 extra-base hits while appearing in 47 games with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons this season.

Expect to see Sweeney serve in a similar role to that of Gio Ushela, who was cut loose by the Blue Jays when the club needed to create an opening on the 25-man roster for left-handed starter Ryan Borucki prior to their June 26 tilt vs. Houston.
