Blue Jays deal Phelps to Cubs, Pompey clears waivers

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired RHP Thomas Hatch from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for RHP David Phelps and cash considerations.
Hatch, 24, has a 4-10 record with a 4.59 ERA across 21 starts for double-A Tennessee this season. The 6-1, 200 lb. product of Oklahoma State has been used exclusively as a starter throughout his three minor league seasons, combining for a 4.10 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP with 336 strikeouts over 368 1/3 innings pitched.
Phelps, 32, has thrown 17 1/3 innings this season with a 3.63 ERA, seven walks, and 18 strikeouts. The St. Louis, Mo., native signed with the Blue Jays on January 12, 2019 and joined the Major League team on June 17 after recovering from Tommy John surgery performed last year. In his seven Major League seasons, the 6-3, 200 lb. right-handed pitcher has posted a 30-33 record with a 3.88 ERA across 571 nnings.
