A day removed from driving in the Blue Jays' only run in an 8-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, Ezequiel Carrera was formally placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right foot fracture on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, Dwight Smith Jr. was recalled from triple-A Buffalo.

Playing in his third season with the Blue Jays, Carrera was batting an impressive .297 with eight extra-base hits and 18 runs scored at the time of Wednesday’s roster move. His on-base percentage of .366 currently ranks second on the team (among qualified batters), trailing only Josh Donaldson’s .420 mark.

In the midst of a career season, the 30-year-old product of Guiria, VZ has accounted for five home runs through 56 games and needs only two more big flies to establish a new career-high in that department.

Having hit an even .400 (14-for-35) over his last 14 games, Carrera  - who was seen using crutches inside the Blue Jays clubhouse prior to Wednesday’s tilt- will join fellow outfielders Darrell Ceciliani (left shoulder), Anthony Alford (left hamate), Dalton Pompey (concussion) and Steve Pearce (right calf strain) on Toronto’s lengthy disabled list.

Pearce has been rehabbing in the minors and will play his second game with the Bisons on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo.

Prior to Wednesday’s series finale at Rogers Centre, the Blue Jays had lost a grand total of 478 man-games to injury in 2017.  130 of those games have come from outfielders alone.

After making his MLB debut in Atlanta earlier this season, this call up will represent Smith Jr’s third stint with the team

Through 55 games with the Bisons in 2017, the left-handed swinging Georgia native has hit .303 with five stolen bases and six home runs on the year.
