Having not thrown a competitive pitch since being lifted in the first inning of a July 3 start vs. the New York Mets, Marco Estrada was formally placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left glute strain on Friday.

In a corresponding move, outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo.

Although the Blue Jays will now need to produce a starter for Saturday's game against the first place Boston Red Sox, Friday's roster shuffle shouldn't come as much of a surprise as the team will elect to give Estrada additional rest in an effort to ensure that the possible trade chip is firing on all cylinders following the All-Star break.

In 17 starts, Estrada has pitched to an ERA of 4.72 while striking out 70 of the 377 batters he's faced this season. With his DL stint being retroactive to June 10, the veteran righty is expected to make a start against the Baltimore Orioles later this month.

Through 30 at-bats with the Blue Jays this season, Smith Jr. has slashed .300/.382/.533 with four doubles and a home run. His promotion will provide the Blue Jays with some additional speed and a capable left-handed bat off the bench.
