TORONTO -- Left-handed starter Jaime Garcia became the latest Blue Jay to land on the disabled list after formally being diagnosed with left shoulder inflammation ahead of Friday night's game against. the Oakland Athletics.
Claiming Garcia's spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Deck McGuire has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo.
In eight appearances with the Blue Jays this season, Garcia has pitched to an ERA of 6.28 with while striking out 38 and walking 21 of the 178 batters he's faced over 38 2/3 innings of work.
Garica laboured through his last start, tossing only three 2/3 innings while walking three and allowing six runs (all earned) on 67 pitches.
With the DL stint being retroactive to May 16th, the 31-year-old product of Reynosa, Mexico, will be eligible to return to the active roster during the Blue Jays' series against the Philadelphia Phillies later this month.
After being optioned in favor of Danny Barnes on Wednesday, McGuire returns to the Blue Jays having not made an appearance since allowing three runs on four hits during Toronto's 12-2 loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday.
The Blue Jays will now need to produce a starter for Sunday's tilt vs. Oakland. Though he remains with the club, right-hander Sam Gaviglio was not listed on the Blue Jays lineup card on Friday. This is likely an early indicator that he will be awarded the assignment in the series' finale.
