Ahead of their attempt to take a series lead in St. Petersburg on Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays placed RHP Matt Shoemaker on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

In a corresponding move, RHP Jacob Waguespack has been recalled from the club's taxi squad.

Through five starts in 2020, the 6-foot-2 Michigan native has gone 0-1 with an ERA of 4.91 and a WHIP of 1.013 across 25 2/3 innings. Those totals include a two-run five-inning effort that saw the former 16-game winner strike out six and induce eight ground balls in the Blue Jays’ 6-5 win over Tampa Bay on Friday night.

With his stint retroactive to August 22, Shoemaker joins fellow right-handed starter Nate Pearson on the club's injured list. The departure of both rotation pieces will test Toronto's depth, likely resulting in an increase of innings for left-handed relievers Ryan Borucki and Anthony Kay.

With Toronto currently in a stretch of 28 consecutive games without the benefit of an off day, additional pitchers may be required. Other 40-man starting options include right-handers Sean Reid-Foley and T.J. Zeuch, while portsider Thomas Pannone could also provide a spot start if called upon.

Recalled for a third time this season (second time this week alone), Waguespack has allowed an OBA of .273 while striking out 14 and walking seven over 11 1/3 innings on the year.
