After missing the last three games with what was initially diagnosed as fatigue, George Springer has been formally placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 3) by the Toronto Blue Jays.

In a corresponding roster move, OF Jonathan Davis was recalled from the Blue Jays' alternate training site.

Having recorded a pair of hits in 22 major league at-bats in 2021, Davis rejoins the team after being optioned to make room for Teoscar Hernandez on May 3. Through 85 big league contests, the 5-foot-8 product of Camden, Ariz., has slashed .185/.278/.287 with eight stolen bases in 10 attempts.

Now shelved with a right quad strain, Springer missed the club's first 21 games with an oblique strain but rejoined the Blue Jays on April 28, picking up three hits and drawing a pair of walks over 18 plate appearances.

In addition to swapping outfielders, Toronto also recalled C Reese McGuire from the club's alternate training site and optioned C Riley Adams.

Needing to create a spot for McGuire on the team's 40-man roster, RHP Julian Merryweather (oblique) was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

In 63 major league games dating back to his big-league debut in 2018, McGuire has slashed .243/.281/.444 with 18 extra-base hits across 169 at-bats. Those numbers include a forgettable 2020 campaign that saw the Seattle native collect just three hits in 45 plate appearances, striking out 11 times and not recording a walk in 19 games.

The 26-year-old McGuire was designated for assignment on April 1 but cleared waivers two days later. His return to the Blue Jays’ active roster was brought on by the fact that Alejandro Kirk (flexor) was placed on the IL after being removed in the seventh inning of Saturday's 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves.

In four games prior to landing on the IL back on April 14, Merryweather tossed 4 1/3 hitless innings and struck out half of the 14 batters he faced. The earliest he will be able to return to Toronto's active roster is June 13.

Adams was called up on Sunday but did not get into a game with Toronto.
