After being removed in the third inning of Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels, RHP Ross Stripling has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

RHP Trent Thornton has been recalled from triple-A and will assume Stripling's spot on the Blue Jays active roster.

Additionally, the club called up right-hander Connor Overton while designating RHP Patrick Murphy for assignment to clear a spot on their active roster.

Through 29 games with Toronto in 2021, Thornton has allowed 21 earned runs on 42 hits, issuing 14 walks and striking out 42 batters across 40 1/3 innings. Wednesday's move marks the 28-year-old's fourth promotion to the big club since July 25th.

Overton, 27, is a former 15th-round draft pick of the Miami Marlins (2014) and joins the Blue Jays after firing off an ERA of 2.03 through 57 2/3 innings with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons this season. The 6-foot right-hander has recorded 50 strikeouts against ten walks this year, with seven of his 21 appearances coming out of the Herd's starting rotation.

Despite options remaining on his contract, Murphy exits the Blue Jays’ roster after allowing five earned runs on 12 hits over his 9 1/3 big league innings in 2021. Through parts of six minor league seasons with Toronto, the 6-foot-5 product of Chandler, Ariz., owns a cumulative ERA of 3.24 with only 20 home runs allowed across an even 456 innings.

In 20 games prior to Wednesday's transaction, Stripling had gone 5-6 with a WHIP of 1.221 over 93 1/3 innings. The veteran hurler has allowed three earned runs or less in 14 of his 19 starts, striking out 91 of the 392 batters he faced on the season.
