Ahead of a three-game set against the front running Tampa Bay Rays, the Toronto Blue Jays recalled LHP Nick Allgeyer and RHP Anthony Castro from triple-A Buffalo.

In corresponding moves, RHP Tyler Chatwood (neck strain) was placed in the 10-day injured list and RHP Patrick Murphy was optioned down to triple-A.

Through nine games with Buffalo in 2021, Allgeyer has allowed 19 earned runs on 43 base hits, eight of which have left the yard. With six of his nine appearances coming as a starter, the 25-year-old Iowa native has struck out 44 batters and issued 24 free passes over 40 1/3 innings.

Though he was called up to the big leagues for the first time in May, the former 12th-round draft pick (2018) has yet to make his Major League debut.

Castro returns to the majors after being optioned to Buffalo in an effort to clear a spot when Steven Matz and Adam Cimber were added to the active roster on June 30.

In 19 games, the 26-year-old right-hander has recorded an ERA of 4.50 with 24 strikeouts against six free passes during his first extended look at the big league level.

Having emerged as one of Charlie Montoyo’s most reliable relief options early on in 2021, Chatwood lands in the IL having surrendered 16 earned runs over his last 11 innings. He’s allowed more walks (15) than he has hits (12) over that span.

Over six appearances with Toronto since being activated on June 16, Murphy has allowed five earned runs in eight hits, striking out four batters, while walking three.
