Down a trio of key rotation pieces, the Toronto Blue Jays recalled RHP Sean Reid-Foley ahead of Wednesday's 6:40 game against the Boston Red Sox in Buffalo. The team also activated OF Derek Fisher from the injured list.

In a corresponding move, RHP Sam Gaviglio and LHP Travis Bergen were optioned to the team's alternate training site.

Reid Foley, 24, has appeared in 16 major league games dating back to his debut in 2018. With 13 of his big league assignments coming as a starter, the 6-foot-3 product of Jacksonville, Fla., has struck out 70 batters while allowing 42 walks and an overall WHIP of 1.631 across 65 innings.

Coming into play on Wednesday, Toronto's relief staff has accounted for more than half (129 2/3 / 118) of the club's 247 2/3 innings in 2020. Three of those innings coming from Gaviglio (1 1/3) and Bergen (1 2/3) in Tuesday's loss.

With Matt Shoemaker (shoulder inflammation), Nate Pearson (flexor strain), and Trent Thornton (loose bodies in his right elbow) on the 10-day injured list, it doesn't look like Toronto's recent relief trend is about to end any time soon. As such, additional bullpen arms like the type Reid-Foley can provide will be a key factor for this team over the next two weeks.

Through six games prior to landing on the IL with a quad issue, Fisher slashed .250/.400/.500 with three home runs in 12 at-bats. His addition to the active roster will likely result in more time at second base for Cavan Biggio.
