Called up in order to assume Joe Smith’s spot within the Toronto Blue Jays' bullpen earlier this week, Leonel Campos tossed only eight pitches before he too was forced off the club's active roster after sustaining a right groin strain during Tuesday’s 6-1 loss to the Texas Rangers.

Needing to supplement an already overworked pen, the Blue Jays recalled César Valdez ahead of Wednesday night's 8:05 first pitch in Arlington.

Prior to the Blue Jays' latest roster move, Valdez was slated to start the triple-A Buffalo Bisons' series finale against the Rochester Redwings on Wednesday. Through seven games with the Bisons in 2017, the 32-year-old righty has pitched to an ERA of 3.67 with 29 strikeouts against only seven walks over 34 1/3 innings.

This marks his second stint with the Blue Jays, and third in the major leagues this season.

Campos’ strain makes him the 19th member of the Blue Jays' 40-man roster to land on the disabled list in 2017.  In all, the club has now had to work around 21 individual stints dating back to spring training, 11 of which have come from the team’s pitching staff.
